Accommodation In French Polynesia

Made up of over 100 different stunning islands that are split between five main island groups, French Polynesia is as diverse, beautiful and exotic, as you can would imagine. The landscapes are incredibly varied and you can relax in style in one of our gorgeous French Polynesia hotels.

History

French Polynesia was one of the last known places in the world to be settled by humans. It is thought that the first people on the islands were migrants from Asia who arrived in around 1500BC. Polynesian groups then began to occupy the islands, until the Europeans arrived in the 1500s. British, Spanish, and French explorers were among those to visit the islands and the French took control of some areas in the 1840s with the aim of converting them to Catholicism. Colonisation then occurred, and the French united all islands in 1889 and created a French protectorate. In the late 1940s people living on the islands were given French nationality and French Polynesia was classed as an overseas territory. Later years saw the islands being greater self-autonomy.

Things to do

With so many islands all spread out over vast areas it’s difficult to know where to begin! Each island offers its own unique charms and vibes, and taking boat trips hopping between several different islands is very popular. Spend perfect days swimming in dazzling blue lagoons, hiking sparkling waterfalls, lazing on soft sandy beaches, and lapping up every last minute of the enticing island way of life.Explore the dramatic and rugged volcanic landscapes, hike soaring mountains, swim in the deliciously clear ocean, and enjoy world-class diving and snorkeling as you explore the coral reefs and all the creatures that live in the water. Head to one of the many lookout points for amazing views to rival those in any glossy travel magazine! If you fancy a bit of adventure, try surfing, kite surfing, and wind surfing. If you’re around in July don’t miss the vibrant Heiva Festival, with its glorious traditional outfits, singing, dancing, games, music, and more.

Shopping and dining

You’ll find some of the tastiest and freshest seafood dishes on the islands, as well as meals made using delicious and fresh locally grown tropical fruits and vegetables. Prices are high when it comes to shopping due to goods having to be imported, but with so many other things to keep you busy, you’re sure not to miss the malls!

Getting here and around

Cheap flights to French Polynesia will take you to Papeete; onward travel between the different islands is easy by domestic flight or boat. Top notch French Polynesia accommodation is available across for islands so start making your plans and treat yourself to an idyllic vacation in one of the world’s most laid-back and spectacular places.
