If you’re looking for a country escape with more to look at that than just paddocks and cows, Warwick’s the place for you! The second oldest free settlement in Queensland after Brisbane, Warwick’s much more than a sleepy country town. Soak up the friendly rustic charm with our range of Warwick accommodation.
Just wandering around Warwick, you’ll love the laid back country vibes and beautiful old buildings, many of which are heritage listed and date back to the mid to late 1800’s. The churches here are particularly spectacular, as well as the grand homesteads, colonial cottages and sandstone buildings that give the town its beauty and charm and tell its story. To learn more of the towns past, head to the Pringle Cottage Museum complex, which has a collection of late 19th century buildings, memorabilia, vehicles and machines. Another place to learn more about the history of the region is the Glengallan Homestead, built in 1867. This stunning two-storey sandstone house is one of the finest homesteads in Queensland and has been lovingly restored after being abandoned for more than 70 years.
Warwick has a strong history of agriculture, so the place to really get to know the town is at the weekly Pig and Calf Market. Not in the market for livestock? Don’t worry, there’s more on offer than the name suggests. As the longest operating market in Queensland, you’ll be sure to find much more than your average city market.
While you’re in the country, you may as well get out and explore it! There are many national and state parks surrounding Warwick as well as plenty of spots to soak up the natural beauty of the place. Explore Queen Mary Falls, the beautiful rock formations and wildflowers of Girraween National Park or the rugged wilderness of Sundown National Park. Warwick is also one of the few places in Queensland that you can actually feel and see the four seasons – autumn in particular is a magical time to visit.
If you want to really get your country on, visit town for the Warwick Rose & Rodeo Festival – a renowned Australian event held annually in October. Cowboy boots and hats required! Say hello to winter with the Jumpers & Jazz in July Festival, when the towns trees are decked out in giant knitted jumpers and the sounds of jazz fills the streets.
Nestled on the banks of the winding Condamine River in the Southern Darling Downs, Warwick is just a 2 hours’ drive from Brisbane or an hour’s drive from Toowoomba. The drive from Brisbane will take you through Cunningham’s Gap in the Great Dividing Range; the views from up here are pretty spectacular and well worth a quick stop if you have time. So keen to go country? Book your Warwick hotel and get packing!
