Holidays in Adia

Take it from us, Adia is the sort of place that's worth taking work off for. You'll find it in Greece, a well-loved region that's known for its amazing beaches, coastal plains, forests and rivers. Need we say more?

It's located 400 kilometres to the southeast of Greece's capital, Athens.

Is there anything more soothing than a leisurely stroll next to the water? Visit Kiotari Beach or Vai Palm Grove if you're looking for a great day out.

If you head 25 kilometres to the southwest from Adia, you'll come across Kasos. Many travellers like to use this as a base when going to the Archaeological Collection of Kasos and Municipal Library of N.Mavris.

Discover the region's scenery from a different angle and partake in some mountain biking or rock climbing. They're both well-liked hobbies around here.

When it comes to taking it easy, not much else tops stepping outdoors and going cycling or shore fishing.

You won't have to bring your guidebook if you sign up for a few guided nature walks, wildlife spotting tours, cycling tours, segway tours, city walking tours, culinary tours and winery tours. Your reputable tour guide will be able to give you the most dependable local knowledge there is!

Want to have a bit of fun off terra firma? Greece is an excellent place to try swimming and snorkeling. They're must-do pastimes, even for landlubbers!

If your little ones are hanging out for some winter fun, why not surprise them with snowboarding? Skiing is also a fun option if they're just firing up!

If you find yourself caught in a downpour, head for cover in one of the region's art museums, history museums, art galleries, craft workshops and theaters.

For an outdoor activity that everyone will like, drop by the local area's open-air museums, open-air exhibits, lighthouses and gardens.

This area has an interesting past. Spend a few hours exploring some of the close-by ruins, castles, traditional villages, old towns, fortresses, historic bridges, historic mansions, historic palaces and archeological sites. Don't worry if you're struggling to find information online — the locals will surely have some yarns to share!

You don't have to be religious to appreciate Adia's churches, cathedrals, mosques, temples and monasteries. Educate yourself on the local set of beliefs and find some stillness at the same time.

Ready to chomp, chew, nibble, gnaw and slurp your way across Greece? A world of decadent flavours is waiting for you, so slip on your stretchiest jeans and bon appétit!

Want some insight into the local fare? We suggest you get a taste for chicken and pork, two staples used in a variety of dishes here.

When in Adia, dine like the locals do. That means sitting down to a meal of moussaka (minced meat and aubergine casserole) or dolmades (vine leaves stuffed with rice), two of the area's most distinctive dishes.

We don't think you'll need too much persuading to have a bite of loukoumades (deep fried pastry with honey), a sweet treat that'll make you want to pack up your bags and move here.

Good news, beer lovers. You'll be able to find a few lip-smacking brews to sink here. Relax with a pint of Neda in a comfortable bar and be sure to text your friends back at home, 'Wish you were beer'.

Like talking about the balance, structure and texture of a delicious drop of wine? Or would you rather rip the cork out and just enjoy it? Savatiano Retsina and Nemea Agiorgitiko are what you should ask for here.

The good news is that Adia will stay just where you found it, so this "Yiá sou" has no need to be your last!

When the time arrives to pack your suitcase and hit the skies, the nearest terminal, Nikos Kazantzakis Airport (HER), is 180 kilometres to the west.
