Holidays in Alfoz

Alfoz is a destination with heaps of cool stories to tell. If you reckon your life's been a bit humdrum lately, a trip here is the perfect answer!

It's situated 460 kilometres northwest of Madrid, the capital of Spain.

Be sure to pack a picnic blanket for a relaxing lunch by the water at Orzan Beach or Riazor Beach.

You don't need to venture too far afield to experience some superb natural sights. Jump in the car and head in the direction of Punta de Estaca de Bares, 40 kilometres away from Alfoz, for a chilled-out day. Or maybe Vixia de Herbeira is more up your alley? You'll find it 50 kilometres away.

Take a trip back to another era as you wander around Castro de Ouro o Pardo de Cela Tower. This historical site has many tales to tell.

If you're contemplating travelling further afield, journey 9 kilometres southeast to Mondonedo. This is where you'll find San Salvador Monastery and Mondonedo Cathedral. We also suggest heading to Foz, 12 kilometres to the northeast, for Fazouro Castro and Basilica of San Martin de Mondonedo.

Roughly 55 kilometres to the south, Lugo is a destination chock-full with things to do. Lugo Cathedral, Praza Maior and Parque Rosalia de Castro aren't that far away. Keep in mind, the Museo Provincial and the Lugo City Walls are also worthwhile.

Whether you enjoy the thrill of Michelin stars or devouring a simple street snack, tasting the local food and drink is one of the most amazing things about travel. So why not tingle your taste buds by trying some of the region's scrumptious offerings?

Searching for some insight into the regional cuisine? We suggest getting a taste for potatoes and cheeese, two traditional ingredients which go into dishes here.

Ask a local for some food suggestions and empanadas will probably be among the first things they advise. Lacon con grelos (pork with parsnips) is another of the area's signature dishes you might like to sample.

You're unlikely to need too much persuading to take a bite of tarta de castanas (chestnut tart), a dessert that'll make you want to sever all ties and settle down here forever.

If your evening begs for something a little stiffer, try aguardiente. Mixed or straight — the bartender should know the most delicious way to drink it.

Try to knock down the communication barrier by memorising some words in the local tongue. You'll gain a more fulfilling, authentic experience and a few new buddies while you're at it! You may be glad you learnt '¡Que pase un buen día!', which translates to 'have a nice day'. One more to commit to memory is '¡Feliz cumpleaños!', meaning 'happy birthday'.

If you're travelling to Alfoz on the 12th of October, get ready to have a ball! National Day sees crowds of locals joining together to celebrate.

It's always a shame to say "Adiós" to Alfoz, but don't worry, it will still be there next time!

Alfoz's closest terminal is Lavacolla Airport (SCQ). When you're ready to pack your bags and take off, go 100 kilometres to the southwest.
