Holidays in Ama

Yep. We understand. Wanderlust — it gets right into your soul. So, isn't it about time you planned your next adventure? Ama awaits!

It sits 1,600 kilometres to the southwest of Tokyo, the national capital of Japan.

Spend at least a couple of hours enjoying the cool ocean breeze at Mission Beach or Kise Beach.

Could you do with some one-on-one time with Mother Nature? Start up the car and check out Tatami Ishi, 50 kilometres from Ama. You can also enjoy some fresh air at Cape Zanpa, 50 kilometres away.

Get your hands on a coffee and head on over to the Zamami Port. After you've finished there, see Chishi Observatory.

If you'd like to do a bit of exploring, add a day trip to Zamami to your plan. This locality is 2 kilometres to the northeast and features the Tokashiki Port and Aharen Beach. After some more ideas? Aka is 4 kilometres to the south of Ama and is known for Aharen enchi Observatory and the Aka Ferry Terminal.

Spend a morning or afternoon visiting Shurijo Castle, Makishi Public Market and Naminoue Beach. They are all close to the centre of Naha, 40 kilometres to the east. Looking for more? The Tsuboya Pottery Museum and DFS Galleria Okinawa should also be on your travel list.

There's no better way to get to know a destination than to literally take a bite out of it! You're invited to explore Okinawa by dining on some of its most tantalizing food and drink.

Beef and noodles are two of the main ingredients used in many dishes here. If you don't have a taste for them already, you may by the end of your journey!

When in Ama, why not eat like a local? That means tucking into a meal of tempura (deep fried seafood or vegetables) or hakata ramen (noodles in pork bone soup), some of the area's distinctive dishes.

You may be eating your way into a bigger set of trousers, but anpan (sweet roll) is certainly worth it. This well-known dessert will have your taste buds tingling at the sight of it.

It's impossible to get the full travelling experience until you've had a sip of the local brew. Whether you'd like to relax in a quiet corner or get some liquid courage to make new friends, ask for Asahi Premium Beer Jukusen.

If the evening calls for something a bit stronger, order some junmaishu. Mixed or neat — the bar person should know the nicest way to drink it.

Ask any experienced traveller and they'll tell you that the easiest way to enhance your travel experience is to learn a handful of the local phrases. Try to articulate 'Kanpai'. It means 'cheers/good health!'. One more often used phrase is 'Hisashiburi' ('long time no see').

If you've got the good luck to be in Ama on the 23rd of December, get ready to have a ball! Birthday of Emperor Akihito sees crowds of people celebrating this auspicious date.

Before you pack up and say "後でお会いしましょう (Atode o ai shimashou)", why not spend the last of your holiday allowance and treat yourself to some mementos of Ama?

When you're ready to pack up your suitcase and head back home, the closest terminal, Naha Airport (OKA), is 35 kilometres to the east.
