Bach 78 Islington Bay, Rangitoto Island

Hi potential guests! The Rangitoto Island Historic Conservation Trust are setting up a new booking system on the trademe site - Holiday houses, which will go live from the 1st of March 2025. A link to this site will soon be added to the Trusts web page.

Until then book here to: Step back in time to a more leisurely age and holiday in a historic Rangitoto bach. Book here to stay overnight on Auckland’s iconic volcanic island.

Bach 78 is located at Islington Bay near the Islington Bay wharf, and Motutapu Island. The bach is a 1 and a ½ hour walk from Rangitoto Wharf or a 2 and a ½ hour kayak from Auckland.

Since the 1920s the baches on Rangitoto have been available to only a few lucky families but now you can join them. Bach 78 has been lovingly restored with the addition of modern bedding, cooking and toilet facilities. Supplied in the kitchen to use are utensils, pots, pans and a 12 volt chilly bin to keep your food cool.

Bach 78 is located directly opposite the Islington Bay Wharf on Rangitoto Island. It has 2 bedrooms, gas cooker, BBQ, solar powered lights and a chemical toilet.

There is a network of well-defined walking tracks giving access to the volcanic features of Rangitoto and the native bush restoration and archaeological sites on Motutapu. The views from the summit of Rangitoto is a must do feature of time spent on the island. Both islands are pest free and you will see native birds and other native wildlife often absent on the mainland.

While the rocky shoreline of Rangitoto can make swimming difficult the sandy beaches of Motutapu are just a short walk away.

Getting there;
Bach 78 is located at Islington Bay on Rangitototo Island. Access to Rangitoto wharf is available from Fullers360 Ferry (https://www.fullers.co.nz/timetables-and-fares), Auckland Sea Shuttle (0508 SEA SHUTTLE), or private boat. Please note that Islington Bay is a1.5 hour walk from Rangitoto Wharf where Fullers usually berth or a 2 minute stroll from Islington Bay Wharf.

Special conditions:
The Department of Conversations biosecurity rules apply.

Small animals, ants, rainbow skinks and weeds or exotic seeds are the biggest threats to the pest-free status of our special islands. Gear that has been in the garage or even stored in the house could be hiding rodents, skinks, insects and seeds. Please help by completing the DOC Biosecurity checklist prior to your arrive on the island.

Extras:

A dream of a holiday
Thank you for such a wonderful stay and it was in the most blissful location. The family came by boat and had a picnic with us. Friends walked to the location from the Rangitoto Ferry terminal and joined us for the second night. Another couple visited from their yacht that was moored at Islington Bay. The historic bach was it's original condition and full of character, It was super clean and the solar power was adequate for keeping food and drinks cool , lights on and the shower room/toilet was so well set up. Thanks immensely for such a happy time and beautiful opportunity. We will be back!

Classic bach holiday
Classic Kiwi bach in a fabulous location. Swimming off the wharf at Islington Bay, exploring Rangitoto and Motutapu and just hanging out enjoying the summer weather. Felt quite special to be able to stay on Rangitoto.

Idyllic step back in time
Our 3 families had a wonderful two nights staying in the 2 Islington Bay beaches. We enjoyed many swims, climbing up to the summit at night, board games and puzzles, seeing bioluminescence and stingrays in the bay. If you can’t cope with long drop or public toilets, this is not for you. If you can, it’s a magical place! Our thanks to the island hosts, original Bach owners and Rangitoto Island Historic Conservation Trust

Peaceful Island Stay
We stayed overnight and found the accommodation took us back in time - slower pace, peaceful sea views and a back to basics bach. We took a three hour walk over farmland on Motatapu, had a BBQ lunch then settled down for a quiet read and looking out at the sea views from our window. An easy walk back to the ferry the next day completed a great night away. Felt like we were hours away from Auckland but only 30 mins!

Very serene location, rustic vibe, helpful and friendly hosts. A bit of a walk from the ferry station and have to bring own food/water etc. But was very worth. Also incredible bird watching!

Paradise on your doorstep
We had an amazing stay at Islington Bay. Compared to camping or tramping we felt spoilt! The bach is amazing and so well cared for. Beds were comfy, and there were even lights and gas too! Perfect spot for walking out around Rangitoto and Motu Tapu. Loved our walk to Wreck Bay. Counted 20 different birds while we there including a family of 6 saddlebacks. Also a huge stingray in the bay. Even got some wharf jumping in. Thanks so much Quincy for your manaaki, we felt right at home and would love to return. And so close to home, still amazed it's not fully booked out for years ahead! Thank you.
