I want to love this place. We stayed here last year and had a wonderful experience but this time around unfortunately it wasn’t quite as positive. Our room had no hot water, the sinks were clogged, the TV gets less than 10 channels, and the room I paid for was not what I received. Lastly, our key card never worked and had to call staff every time we needed to get into our room. Staff was unapologetic with every problem. If you have foreign money, than it’s probably a bargain but if you pay in reais you are getting overcharged, but Belem unfortunately is an expensive city when it really shouldn’t be. The area around the hotel is notoriously dangerous after sunset that the staff didn’t recommend we walk less than a block to eat at a restaurant near by for fear of muggings, even though it’s adjacent to a naval base!! I’ve lived in Brazil for many years, am a citizen… I get it, but make an entry in the back of the hotel to make it easier to access the Mangal das garças so your patrons don’t have to feel sketched out walking that creepy 300 feet to get there. I don’t know… simple things. Other than that, the hotel is absolutely stunning in beauty. Reminiscent of the Cloisters museum in NYC (I’m originally a New Yorker) and the breakfast is top notch. Also, you get a free massage. Mine was great but my wife woke up with more pain in her back. Like I say, I really want to love this place, but small improvements would make it compete with some of the best hotels in the world.
