We lived in France thirty years ago, and for our first nights back in the country we wanted the essence of French village life. We picked Sommieres not having been there before and the Hotel Estelou, and we could not have done better. A short drive from the airport in Montpellier, Sommieres is stunning, with street after ancient, winding street and cafes and restaurants. We could be completely self-contained there. The hotel is a short walk from the center and right next to a long bicycle trail. It is immaculate and the staff extremely friendly. The only thing we'd change next time is to request a room with a window that opens. Our room was air-conditioned and comfortable, opening onto the incredible terrace and large pool. The town offers lots of walking, and the Roman bridge over the Vidourle offers lovely views, one of which is now my screen saver. From Sommieres, you are an hour or less from an incredible number of other villages clinging to hillsides, from the beaches, from the Pont du Gard and Nimes and Avignon, and the list goes on. Highly recommended.
