Holidays in Chauk

Chauk is a place with stacks of cool stories to tell. If you think your life's been a bit boring lately, a trip here is the perfect answer!

It's situated 170 kilometres away from Naypyidaw and its lively streets.

You don't need to be stuck in a car all day to see some nature around these parts. Just 45 kilometres out of Chauk, Mount Popa is a great place to fill your lungs with fresh air. Even more peaceful surrounds are waiting for you at Taung Kalat, 40 kilometres away.

Seeking some other close-by places? Kyaukpadaung is about 30 kilometres to the northeast, so hop in the car and start exploring! Alternatively, Popa, 40 kilometres northeast of Chauk, is also worth the time.

Spend an afternoon walking around the Dhammayangyi Temple, the Payathonzu Temple and the Lawkananda Paya. These sights are all near the middle of Bagan, 45 kilometres to the north. Need something else to do? The Somingyi Kyaung and the Nagayon ought to also be on your travel list.

Hot air ballooning encourages you to take a leap of faith. Face your fears and take to the sky for the ride of your life!

Step off dry land and see Myanmar from another perspective. With a variety of exciting activities like swimming and scuba diving available, it's a great playground for water fanatics.

If you find yourself stuck in nasty weather, head for shelter in one of the region's history museums, art galleries and craft workshops.

You'd be hard-pressed to find a more interesting way to explore the local area than by heading over to its open-air markets.

Step back in time by paying a visit to the region's ruins and historic palaces. When it comes to understanding the significance of these structures, a professional tour guide can offer some deeper insight.

If you enjoy questioning what life is really all about, consider a visit to Chauk's temples and monasteries. While we can't promise you'll find the answer you're looking for, you're sure to at least find a little peace and quiet.

Whether you enjoy the thrill of Michelin stars or wolfing down a snack from a street cart, tasting the local food and drink is one of the greatest things about travel. So why not tempt your taste buds by tucking into some of the region's delicious offerings?

Typical cuisine here often includes ngapi (fermented seafood) and a thoke (salads), two commonly used ingredients for which the local region is known for plating up.

Ask a local for some food suggestions and tea leaf salad will probably be the first thing they advise. Shan-style rice (fish rice) is another regional specialty you might like to sample.

Halawa (sticky rice, butter and coconut) is a dessert that sums up this place in just a single mouthful. Order a serving and see how long it takes you to come back for more!

Want to get involved in the Independence Day festivities? Mark the 21st of March on your calendar and get ready to party!

When it's time to fly off, make sure you have enough time to head to Mandalay International Airport (MDL). Situated 160 kilometres to the northeast from Chauk, this is the nearest terminal.

Great Stay
"We had a great stay here. I’m normally not one to take the time to leave reviews, but I have never stayed somewhere with such a genuinely friendly, accommodating staff. Hotel was also very clean and comfortable, easy E-bike ride to Old Bagan (which you can rent from the hotel for a reasonable price). ..."
