Holidays in Chumbe Island

Hey, we get it! You're sick to death of work and you need a break, yeah? So why not take some annual leave and suss out the striking beaches of Tanzania. Just book a ticket to Chumbe Island and take it from there.

It's situated 60 kilometres away from Dar es Salaam and its busy streets.

Spend a few hours walking along the shore and picking up perfect seashells at Nungwi Beach or Kendwa Beach.

There's no need to travel for hours to uncover some splendid natural sights. Pack up the car and follow the road signs to Prison Island, 18 kilometres away from Chumbe Island, for a relaxing day. Or perhaps Jozani Forest Reserve is more your cup of tea? It sits just 25 kilometres away.

Go 13 kilometres to the north and you'll come across Zanzibar Town. It's regarded for some outstanding attractions, including the Slave Market and Old Fort.

When you want to unleash the adventurer within, gear up for some rock climbing. That said, there aren't many better ways to see the wonder of the region's landscapes than with a little mountain climbing.

Bird watching and wildlife watching are wonderful ways to take a breather if the sightseeing crowds have left you on edge.

What about signing on for some guided nature walks, wildlife spotting tours and wildlife safaris? Listen to your friendly tour guide while exploring the best of what the region has on offer.

Want to have a bit of fun off dry land? Tanzania is an excellent place to dive into some swimming and snorkeling. They're must-do activities, even for the biggest landlubber!

Check out the region's craft workshops. They are excellent places to visit when the rain starts bucketing down.

Put on some comfortable shoes and make your way to one of the surrounding area's various outdoor attractions. Its open-air markets are just waiting to be explored.

Check in with the history buff within by visiting the close-by ruins, traditional villages and archeological sites. They're all excellent places to find out a thing or two about the region's past.

'There is no love sincerer than the love of food,' George Bernard Shaw once wrote, but throw travel into the mix and it's a marriage made in heaven. You're invited to indulge in your two loves by eating and drinking your way through Tanzania.

This area has some unique recipes centred on local ingredients. You'll find ugali (maize porridge) and fish are two typical elements in much of the fare.

When the locals talk to you about their favourite food, you might hear ugali (cornmeal) or vitumbua (rice cakes) uttered a few times. These specialties are part of the area's identity and should be on any foodie's must-try list.

You probably won't need too much persuading to have a bite of kashata ( made from coconut and ground nuts), a treat that'll make you want to pack your bags and settle down here for good.

You won't get the full travelling experience until you've had a sip of the local beer. Whether you want to satisfy your thirst or get some liquid courage to make new friends, order tusker beer.

What better way to discover more about a place than by involving yourself in a day of national celebration? There'll be many festivities arranged for Union Day on the 26th of April.

It might be time to leave and head home, but it doesn't have to mean forever. Why not save your spare Tanzanian shillings for a return trip to this magnificent region?

Ready to hit the skies? Pack up your bag, set the alarm clock and plan a route to Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR). It's around 65 kilometres to the south.
