The staff were fantastic. The hotel is clean and well presented. My only niggle was that we chose the Marcella Suite as it was my wifes birthday (thank you to the staff for the welcome chocs) and the room was not as shown on the website. The very 'boutique' style of gold wallpaper with burds and the large bay window curtains with beautiful feathers was diluted fairly new tartan carpet. Just a bit of an eye squeezer. Breakfast and dinner for the time we were there was in the 'rose room'. Again the service was great the food was good everything was clean. There are large glass chandellier and wall sconces in rose style (murano?). Against these are pretty bulk standard tables and chairs and one of those carpets designed not to show stains. I can not fault the staff or the way I was looked after. I had the feeling that what had been a bespoke designed boutique hotel had been taken over by very efficient but very corporate management and things that were faulty or dirty have been replaced by smart efficient, durable furniture, carpets, bedding and although this is clean and servicabke it has lost somthing of the glamour Id been hoping to enjoy.

Everything about this hotel was excellent! Great location, comfortable rooms, lots of parking, lovely breakfast. The friendly and helpful staff deserve a special mention as they made a great stay even better. Great value and would definitely stay again.

The location of Grey Friars is fantastic for walking to the High Street, shopping and public transportation. The room was large and beautifully decorated. It was quiet and very clean. I had two major issues with my stay, however. There was a blinking red light on the ceiling over the bed that made sleeping without a mask difficult. I was told it was part of the fire system and could not be covered/turned off. The second issue was that the room was way too warm and the thermostat could not be adjusted so they brought me a fan after I asked twice for the thermostat to be repaired.

This is a good hotel, well run with good food. The only thing they could improve on is the information on their restaurant. It is Egon Ronay recomended but only the table d'hôte menu (excellent but limited) and bar menu is available Monday to Thursday. A full a là carte menu is available at the weekend. I was told by different staff that the restaurant was closed Monday & Tuesday (untrue) fully open (untrue) and, correctly, open all week but the full a là carte menu only available at the weekend. The hotel is well positioned with its own car park.

Our room was lovely - the bed was comfortable and inviting. The bathroom was massive, with walk in shower and a fabulous bath. We loved the use of complimentary dressing gowns and an iron and ironing board. The mini bar with five or six free drinks, plus the usual tea and coffee facilities, were all most welcome. Everything in the hotel was spotlessly clean. Staff were, without exception, friendly, helpful and professional. The classic Afternoon Tea was wonderful. Breakfast was also good and included in our overnight stay. A lovely treat for 24 hours!

Excellent hotel. Close to town center. Staff are wonderful and take great care of the guests. I only had breakfast so can’t talk about evening meals. I can thoroughly recommend this hotel.

Everything about the hotel and staff was excellent and could not be faulted apart from the cost of drinks which were very high. Fabulous little pub literally at hotel gate called The Foresters, strongly recommend.We were quite disappointed with Colchester itself and surrounding area so we found the location not great.Generally hotel is brilliant and we had great stay

Best deal ever
We have stayed at the GreyFriars hotel 4 times now Have never had such a great deal as the last occasion using Hotels.com It was £200 cheaper than before same amount of nights and one of the best hotel rooms.

Our room was not like the pictures and was across the road not part of the mail building - swimming pool not private with people say at booths drinking round it. Room has no coffee making facilities and room smelled of dinners. Behind shower millions of cobwebs and we were forgotten about for 25mins in breakfast.
