Holidays in Coolah

Wondering why New South Wales is such a massive hit with travellers? Well, we reckon its picturesque rural landscapes might have something to do with it! Base yourself in Coolah and you'll be in an excellent spot to explore them.

The country's capital, Canberra, lies about 390 kilometres to the south of Coolah.

If you've got enough time, why not go to some nearby destinations? Cassilis and Moolarben are 35 kilometres and 60 kilometres away, respectively.

Release your adventurous side and check out the local landscapes with a day of mountain climbing. Or, perhaps you'd rather go hiking?

A few hours outside in the fresh air can quieten the mind. If you're feeling a little frazzled, why not wind back the pace and go shore fishing or bird watching?

Too many things to see and do? Sometimes the best way to discover a place is with a couple of tours. The region offers some first-rate wildlife spotting tours, culinary tours and winery tours.

Even the most courageous travellers might get sweaty palms at the prospect of sky diving. Why not challenge yourself and give it a go?

Searching for some fun off dry land? New South Wales is a fabulous place to dip your toes into some swimming and sea kayaking. They're must-do pastimes, even for the biggest landlubber!

Get into the swing of winter by trying snowboarding. If you're not ready to take off your coat, you could also try skiing.

Take a look at what's going on at the region's history museums and craft workshops. There are a few to select from, so it's a good idea to do your research!

'There is no love sincerer than the love of food,' according to George Bernard Shaw, but throw travel into the mix and it's a marriage made in heaven. You're invited to combine your two loves by eating and drinking your way across New South Wales.

A meal here often includes beef and oysters, two essential elements for which the area is known for dishing up.

Of course, you can't leave Coolah without sinking your teeth into salt and pepper squid or meat pie. Popular with locals and considered regional classics, they are an essential experience for anyone with an interest in food.

'Stressed' spelled backwards is 'desserts', and we don't think that's a coincidence. There's no tastier way to let your worries melt away than with peach melba, a treat often found on dinner tables here.

If you really want to see the big pitcher, grab the hopportunity to toss back a beer. Schooner rather than later! Cheesy beer puns aside, don't forget to try out Hahn, one of the most well-known local brews.

Bundaberg Spiced Rum is the go-to spirit for many New South Wales locals. Order up a shot or two and embrace that warm glow!

You don't have to be a wine lover to appreciate a tasty glass! Here, Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon and Orange region Merlot are impossible to ignore.

Kingsford Smith International Airport (SYD), the nearest airport, is 270 kilometres to the southeast from the middle of Coolah. Map out a route, pack your bag and set an alarm clock — and be sure not to hit the snooze button too many times!

Lovely place
"We had a delightful stay at the Shearer's Huts and had a great time testing our telescopes and astrophotography while we were there. Beds are comfy, kitchen is cute, fridge was generously full. We appreciated the fire pit on cold nights too. Lucy is a wonderful host."
