You'll discover one of Sri Lanka's most significant cities a mere day trip from Dambulla. Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte is 140 kilometres to the southwest.

Once you're in Dambulla, it's only 14 kilometres north to Sigiriya. Stop by and visit Sigiriya Archaeological Site, a famous attraction that's not to be missed.

Mother Nature's handiwork is yours to explore in multiple places around Dambulla. Just 16 kilometres away, Pidurangala Rock is a great place to start. Minneriya National Park sits 25 kilometres away and is another nice spot for some peace and quiet.

Whatever your religion, you're sure to be captivated by the soothing and calm atmosphere of the Dambulla Cave Temple.

If you head 18 kilometres to the southwest from Dambulla, you'll reach Wahakotte. Some travellers like to use this as a base when visiting the Nalanda Gedige and Na Uyana Aranya.

Whether it's for a bit of shopping or to explore the sights, visitors often make their way over to Polonnaruwa, 35 kilometres to the east. The Gal Viharaya, Hatadage and the Nissanka Latha Mandapaya are close by. Of course, you shouldn't miss out on the Gal Pota and the Polonnaruwa Vatadage either.

Clothing? Check. ID? Check. But have you brought your appetite? With some delicious food and drink to sample across this region, it's the one thing you shouldn't leave home without.

Do you enjoy chicken? What about beef? Whether you're into them or not, they are two staple ingredients you'll often find in the cooking here.

There's always a local plate or two that you need to tick off the list, and when you're in Dambulla, kiribath with onion samba (milk rice) is certainly among them. Vegetarian kottu (stir fried mix) is another local classic that's sure to make an impression.

Dinner isn't dinner without dessert, so stop worrying about counting calories for a while and indulge in one of the most enticing sweet treats, king coconut.

Planning to be here around the 4th of February? Luck is on your side. Each year on this day, the whole country bands together for Independence Day.

Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB), the nearest airport, is about 120 kilometres to the southwest from the middle of Dambulla. Pick a route, pack your bag and set an alarm — and don't hit the snooze button too many times!
