A beautiful summer's day on arrival. Drinks in the garden. Friendly, helpful staff. Peaceful location with lovely views of the neighbouring cows in the field. Ten minute walk over the river into town with views of the castle. Comfy bed! Good food!
Away from the centre of town but very walkable and easy parking. Our cottage room had easy access ; it had newly renovated bathroom but was small , a bit dingy and needed upgrading to be the deluxe room it was advertised to be. Some attention needs to be paid to the small insects attracted by the light to thr cottage door way. The main house may be preferable. The owners is very personable and the food in the restaurant was good.
We really enjoyed our stay at The Cliffe. Food was amazing and we were lucky enough to be there when there was live jazz playing. Very dog friendly too. Comfortable, clean rooms, reasonable prices.
Our only criticism was that our room was directly above the exhaust fans from the kitchen; even though they weren't too noisy and did stop when the kitchen closed, there was quite a heavy food smell in our room when we had the windows open. Other than that, it was great and we will be back - in a different room!

Time to move on
Stayed at this hotel a few years ago. Then it was excellent. We had a room in the attic which had been refurnished and very nice. This time we had a room that reminded me of a Blackpool boarding house. Shower old and difficult to work with wet hands. A slight slope between the bedroom and en-suite was a definate trip hazard. Carpets showing their age. Room very small. Terrible. Needs some TLC. Others in our party had similar opinions regarding their rooms (we did see their rooms and had to agree) The food was still excellent but the portion size was much reduced than the last time we ate at the restaurant. The bar closed at 10.00 (on Sundays). The experience is not to be repeated.
