Nothing Elite about this place

Such a shame that this hotel has changed hands. Now owned by Britannia Hotels. Virtually deserted car park. Tired exterior. Unkempt gardens. No conversation welcome on check in with simple - that’s what you’ve booked- comment when I saw Double Cosy room. Doesn’t state the word ‘cosy’ on the website. Food would not be served in the restaurant but the bar. ‘When the chef gets here’ I was told. The room was indeed ‘ cosy’. Small but ok for one. Bathroom and sides were clean but the floor could have done with another vacuum. Decided to walk out for food elsewhere. Star Inn, just along the road. Had a walk into the Spa and swimming pool. Used to be lovely. Just not a good aroma, tired and unkempt now. No staff manning it. Deserted, gave it a miss. Had a broken nights sleep on a squeaky lumpy mattress. Bumpy pillows with a musty smell. Quick cup of tea, after I’d cleaned the nozzle of the kettle of whatever detritus had nestled itself there! Checked out with not a nod of acknowledgment from the two ladies on the front desk. In my opinion, the staffs attitude is as tired as the hotel. Needs a major revamp now as sadly in decline. I don’t think that Britannia Hotels is going to achieve this. Asylum hotel accommodation incoming I fear.

Good facilities, more appropriate for older people

When we arrived we had a very quick check in, minimal description about what the hotel had available for us, very much just this is your room to your rights and restaurant to the left. As a young couple we didn't really feel welcomed. The room itself was comfortable, we had a good night sleep, however the TV is not a smart TV, couldn't access netflix or anything other than standard TV, which for a 4 star hotel, I expected. Bathroom was spacious and the toiletries smelt nice. Breakfast ( included) was very nice, both the staff members in the restaurant and gym were friendly. The gym is small , but perfect for a couple of guests. We didn't have a spa treatment but we used the spa facilities. Good size pool, jacuzzi and steamer. Definitely not suitable for more than 10 people at a time in the spa, it can get crowded, but we went in the morning, which was nice. On check out, again it was very quick and firm. Other families and couples that were older just had more conversation from reception. We tried but got pushed to the side. We didn't cause any issues, so we are not sure whether because we were young or 2 females sharing a room was an issue.

I had a very comfortable stay in a very well kept large room. The reception staff were very friendly. I was pleased there was plenty of free parking, as I was travelling through and most other Gatwick hotels did not offer this without a fee.

Lovely stay.

From arrival at reception to departure the following day, the attention to detail and assistance shown towards my wife who is disabled was excellent. The room was well fitted out being clean and comfortable. The breakfast was very good, nicely presented and prepared. We will not hesitate to make use of the hotel on future family visits.
