I sent money to Expedia for the booking. I arrive to the hotel, the hotel says my booking is cancelled. Expedia pretends to not know what is going on, then the hotel reciprocates this same notion. Expedia, and the hotel, both stole my money.

My wife and I stayed at many different RIU Palace across the world. This was one of the worse ones we stayed at. This resort lacked entertainment and engagement. I was shocked because every RIU is know for entertainment. They offered games by the pool, but didn’t try to include many quest instead they just had like 5 guest playing. It rained a good amount of time during our trip and the resort couldn’t seem to hold many indoor activities or events. When speaking with other guest, it seemed we all had the same experiences. On our last night, our room was having technical difficulties and wouldn’t allow us to enter. The staff tried opening it with their master key and it still didn’t work. We were placed in an empty room for the night. When morning came, we expected the room would be open so we can make it to our scheduled excursions but it wasn’t. We were told maintenance wouldn’t be in until 8am. Management informed us multiple times we would receive a one day refund for the inconvenience with the room door but they couldn’t process it since we purchased our stay through Expedia. The manager stated Expedia would have to email the resort directly for a refund. It has now been 4 days and Expedia has been trying to get a hold of management but they have been avoiding dealing with the issue in hopes we would forget they promised this refund. Overall, I would not recommend this resort. I would recommend other RIU palace in the world just not Guanacaste Costa Rica.

Our experience in CR. No for partying
The service was amazing. The bed was comfortable. The food and drinks are really good. The place is really good overall. The only thing that we didn’t like is the guidance when you check in We were not told there’s two hours between breakfast and lunch that you don’t get any food besides A few sandwiches and coffee. I think they should tell you how many restaurants and the hours of operation once to check in. I will suggest to check the weather before you go. We went on a hurricane, so it was raining all day So we didn’t even get the beach or sun. Also, if you planning to go dancing or do something keep in mind that the nearest town is about at least one to two hours away. This place is to men to do outdoor stuff If you want to party, then the best will be at the resort , They don’t have any clubs for dancing, but they’re building one and they should be open next year . The rooms are outdated they look like the 80s. So they don’t look as nice as the pictures showed. A lot of times I didn’t taste any alcohol on my cocktails so if you want to get more for your money, I will suggest to ask for shots. Other than that, there’s not much to do there besides chill drink and eat and they have a band every night playing, but it’s usually local music. (Spanish) My suggestion is to have a DJ with more pop dance music for the guest.

Our stay was average. It was very frustrating to have to show up to the restaurants at 5:30 in order to get a seat. Then some of them would be closed on nights we wanted to attend. The main issue is when we were leaving the resort, there was a tremendous amount of rain to the point the road was washed out. Our transport service advised our driver to turn around and have us wait out the rain at the resort. This was at 11:00AM. We attempted to do this; however, we were not allowed past the front gate. I even explained that we just wanted to wait in the lobby and use the restroom. We were told that we would have to pay an additional night to do this. This was very disheartening since we had already stayed there, had another reservation at a different resort, to attend a work conference. Our safety was at risk and RIU did nothing to accommodate. I don't think we will ever stay at this resort chain again.

I really loved the staff and I did enjoy the resort but there are a few things that need attention. I like that you can go to the other Rio resort as well. I will say the buffet was great for breakfast and lunch but at dinner time it was not so great. The seating was a little unorganized at the buffet for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Some people would just be told to sit anywhere and there would be someone sitting there already so it caused some confusion and frustration with some guests. The A La Carte restaurants were not explained properly at the front desk. We were told to go at 530pm to make the line and then we would receive a beeper to come back when a table was ready but that was not the case at all. We needed to go back once they opened and see if they had any tables for the night. The pool bar staff (Calero, Christopher and Richard) were amazing and the drinks were always on point. Pool entertainment was good. Naye always made her way around talking to everyone and I loved that she was so personable. Night shows were pretty good. The room was cleaned everyday but our TV did not work. I called a few times and went to the front desk several times and no one ever came to fix it. The beach was a black sand beach and wasn’t too pretty. The amount of solicitors on the beach was insane! We walked down there once in our 6 day stay and that was enough. I would definitely go back and give it another try.

This is a great all inclusive property for families. We had my 2 and 3 year old grandchildren and there were all kinds of activities (water park) to keep them entertained all day with great childrens shows put on by the entertainment staff every evening.

The view is incredible. The bars, if the open erlier than 10am will be great, and more options open when the restaurants are closed.
