We added a trip to stay at Lumley Castle at the end of our Scotland trip because of the similarity to our last name. I'm so glad we did. We stayed in a State Bedroom in the Castle. Because they had no events scheduled for the night we were there we were allowed to explore. It is so well preserved. It was a magical place. One of the staff, Jack took his break to give us a small tour and tell us some ghost stories. The bar was welcoming, High Tea was all we wanted it to be and dinner was excellent. Our trip to the castle was one of the highlights of our trip. I would suggest getting a cab or uber from the train station to the castle. Its quite a walk.

If you fancy sleeping like a medieval king or queen then this is the place for you. We were in a room up umpteen concrete steps and then a narrow concrete spiral staircase to a room smelling of cigarettes and dull as hell. Not for me, left a day early. Seriously if you have mobility problems get a court yard room

We liked the setting and the look of the castle we thought the breakfast was very good and also the staff were very Welcoming and Helpful . We felt the room was very tired looking, we were very cold in the room and had to resort to sitting with the fan heater on that was in the wardrobe , not Really acceptable for 2024 but we had very pleasant stay non the less .

The hotel would benefit from refurbishment
Room 3 is very tired (requires refurbishment), the bed alcove is very cramped and dark.

Fantastic place to stay and the entry level room I booked was excellent. Just enough for what I needed for a comfortable night's stay on business. Walking from the room to the restaurant is a bit of a labrynth of corridors which adds to the character of the place. It is a castle after all! Plenty of parking available. Would happily stay again

The castle was full of character, easily accessible and in a lovely location with good parking. The personal service was excellent throughout and the food plentiful and very tasty. The breakfast menu was particularly extensive!

Enjoyed our stay. Most of the staff were friendly and helpful and the castle was full of interest and quirky features. Main negatives were the narrow stone spiral staircase up to our room which was ill lit and hard to negotiate with luggage ( thats after going up external stone stairs to 1st floor level !), and the really dim poor lighting in the room itself. Would definitely stay again, but choose a different room.

The castle was so quirky and interesting. It was a bit tight in some areas on my mobility scooter inside, but what would you expect from a 600 yr old building! The staff were so accommodating and helpful, we cant fault them at all there is a disability lift so we could explore the 1st floor halls.. The grounds are beautiful and mostly accessible, I took one area that aas a little optimistic but most pathways and roads are smooth surfaced, we had some lovely walks after breakfast. The meals in the library were fabulous, try the Castle Club House sandwich, but get one to share its huge. The breakfasts are fabulous and offer great value and choice. Again, the staff were 1st class. We stayed in the courtyard rooms, the rooms are quaint and very quiet. Its also a brilliant base to explore the aurrpunding areas, we visited Seaham, which was so easy to negotiate on my scooter, lots of dropped kerbs, flat pavements and pedestrianised areas, it made a refreshing change. The slope from the harbour was a bit steep for my little mobility scooter, however, there is lots of parking, clean toilet facilities and a lift to enable access to the raised cafe overlooking the sea. We also visited the Botanic Gardens in Durham, these are beautiful, but access can be difficult for wheelchair and scooter users once you get beyond the cafe patio area. We will definitely visit Lumley Castle again.
