Holidays in Fudai-mura

Fudai-mura is a destination that has stacks of cool stories to tell. If you feel like your life's been a bit boring lately, a trip here is the perfect answer!

Japan's capital city, Tokyo, lies about 520 kilometres to the south of Fudai-mura.

Spend a day enjoying the refreshing ocean breeze and collecting shells by the water's edge at Tanesashi Beach or Jodogahama Beach.

Fill your lungs with fresh, clean air and admire the natural beauty of Ryusendo Limestone Cave. It lies 17 kilometres away from Fudai-mura. You'll also discover some quiet time at Jodogahama Visitor Center, 40 kilometres away.

Spend your days moving between the steep slopes and a roasting fire at Appi Kogen Ski Resort and Tazawako Ski Resort. From total newbies to those who know their stuff, there's something to delight everyone at these wintry wonderlands.

If you're contemplating expanding your horizons, head 8 kilometres south to Tanohata. This is where you'll discover Unosu Cliff and Kitayamazaki Coast. We also suggest swinging by Kuji, 25 kilometres to the northwest, for the Kujikohaku Museum and Machinaka Aquarium.

Both tourists and locals often make the journey to Hachinohe. This place is 65 kilometres to the northwest and close to Nejo Castle, the Korekawa Archaeological Museum and Hachinohe Yatai Village Miroku Yokocho. If you're staying a while, don't miss the Hachinohe City Museum of Art and the Hachinohe Mine.

Your eyes shouldn't get to have all the fun while visiting Iwate. Give your taste buds a little lovin' too by trying out the local food and drink. After all, you can't say you've really experienced a place until you've tasted its flavours.

This region has its own cuisine based on local ingredients. You'll discover beef and noodles are two popular elements in many of the dishes.

You don't need to spend all night reading through the restaurant menu while in Fudai-mura. Get stuck right in and sink your teeth into the area's specialties, such as tempura (deep fried seafood or vegetables) and jappa-jiru (fish gut and vegetable soup).

Dessert is always a good idea, so why not tuck into some anpan (sweet roll)? It's worth every delicious calorie!

If you truly want to see the big pitcher, grab the hopportunity to sip on a beer. Schooner rather than later! Cheesy beer puns aside, make sure you order Asahi Premium Beer Jukusen, one of the most well-known local brews.

If the evening begs for something a bit more potent, order some junmaishu. On the rocks or neat — your bartender ought to know the tastiest way to drink it.

Knowing how to say a couple of expressions in the local tongue will make travelling through the Iwate region that little bit less challenging. First of all, have a go at saying 'O-namae wa nan desu ka'. This translates as 'what's your name?'. There's also 'Konnichiwa' ('hello').

Pencil the 23rd of December in your diary. To the locals, this means just one thing — Birthday of Emperor Akihito. A prominent day of celebrations, this is a great time to be in the country.

When it finally comes time to leave, spend the last of your holiday allowance and say one last "Sayōnara" to Fudai-mura.

The closest terminal is New Chitose Airport (CTS). When it's time to pack your bag and fasten your seatbelt, head 310 kilometres to the north.
