Beautiful hilltop location, with breathtaking views. Medieval fortress and villa allows one to experience Chianti from a historic and soulful perspective as you walk across cobblestones that have been traversed for centuries. This is not a cookie-cutter hotel setting and we loved it. Our suite was huge, comfortable, quiet and clean, with both a large bedroom and separate large living room. The antique and eclectic furnishings were interesting and the rooms were functional rather than creatively decorated. The hotel provides a rustic and authentic atmosphere more than a luxurious one which, again, we truly enjoyed. There is also a huge area on the top floor for reading, watching TV or just lounging, which leads to a rooftop terrace from which the views and sunsets were stunning. The independently operated restaurant has been beautifully updated which provides an elegant setting for their upscale, perfectly prepared dinner, popular with locals as well as hotel guests. The restaurant collaborates with the hotel to provide breakfast for guests. Theirs is no ordinary bed and breakfast offering, which definitely adds to the value of staying at Rocca di Castagnoli. The estate still operates as a highly-regarded winery and the onsite wine-tasting room and barrel room tour is another plus. Service and congeniality abounds from all staff encountered in the hotel, restaurant and winery. We were happy to be there and sorry when it was time to leave.
