Holidays in Gonam

Been up 'til dawn way too often lately? Desperate for a break and a few early nights? Gonam might just be the ticket. It's set among the beaches of South Chungcheong — nice and off the beaten track. (We bet you'll feel so relaxed, you'll be under the covers by sunset!)

South Korea's capital city, Seoul, sits roughly 140 kilometres to the north of Gonam.

There's no need to journey too far to discover some impressive natural sights. Grab your car keys and make your way over to TaeanHaean National Park, 30 kilometres away from Gonam, for a chilled-out day. Or maybe Sapsido Island is more your thing? It's located just 10 kilometres away.

How about visiting the Korea Traditional Architecture Museum and the Jeongamsa Temple? These awesome attractions are quite close to the middle of Hongseong, 25 kilometres to the northeast. Use this as a base for a while and venture outwards!

Tourists often head over to Jeonju. This place is 90 kilometres away and close to the Gyeonggijeon, the Jeonju Historical Museum and the Jeonju National Museum. If you're staying a little while, remember to stop by the Pungnammun Gate and Jeondong Catholic Church.

Transform your travels through this part of the world into a memorable experience with a bit of mountain climbing or hiking. They're very popular outdoor activities here.

Shore fishing and picnicking are excellent ways to give yourself some time out if your jam-packed travel itinerary has left you feeling frazzled.

If you get caught in a storm, take cover in one of the region's history museums and craft workshops.

You'd be hard-pressed to find a more interesting way to learn about the local area than by seeing its open-air exhibits.

The area has a long, rich history. Spend a little time discovering the surrounding old towns and fortresses. Don't stress if there isn't that much information available online — the locals are sure to have some yarns to share!

Experience the area from a spiritual perspective by visiting its temples and shrines. Pause for your own quiet reflection or simply observe the locals in prayer.

To really experience a place is to try the local food and drink, so get ready to crunch, munch, slurp and sip your way through South Chungcheong. The only thing you need to bring with you is a solid appetite!

Eager to know some of the popular ingredients used in the local kitchens? Prepare to taste beans and mushrooms in a number of your meals.

When the locals talk to you about their favourite food, it's likely you'll hear eoriguljeot (oysters with chili) or bibimbap (sautéed vegetables on rice) mentioned once or twice. These specialties form part of the region's identity and ought to be on any foodie's must-eat list.

'Stressed' spelled backwards is 'desserts', and that's no coincidence. There's no tastier way to let your problems melt away than with bungeo-ppang (red bean filled pastry), a treat often found on dining tables here.

They say life's not all beer and skittles, but there's certainly nothing wrong with kicking back with a cold one once in a while. While you're in this neck of the woods, make sure it's Prime Max.

Have you heard of cheongju (rice wine)? It's one of the tastiest ways to add some oomph to your night out in South Chungcheong. Ask the barkeeper for a taste and then order one or more shots!

If you're considering checking out Gonam in August, you'll want to be here around the 15th for Liberation Day. There's always plenty of excitement in the air on this national day of festivities.

Situated 60 kilometres to the south is Gunsan Airport (KUV), the nearest terminal. Ensure you have ample time to get there.

"The pension is in a good location not far from the local village. This location is a little isolated but there are nice rural areas nearby. There is a bridge nearby leading to wonsando island where you can enjoy a few good beaches. The host was also very helpful during our stay."
