Holidays in Helidon

Adventure. Relaxation. Adventure. Relaxation. Off to Helidon but can't make up your mind what type getaway you're looking for? Don't get in a flap! We'll help sort it out.

It sits 910 kilometres north of Canberra, the capital of Australia.

There's nothing like a picnic by the ocean. While you're in the area, you may want to visit Colmslie Beach Reserve, 95 kilometres to the east.

You don't have to go too far to experience some nice natural sights. Find a set of wheels and venture over to Ravensbourne National Park, 19 kilometres away from Helidon, for a relaxing day. Or maybe Highfields Falls is more to your taste? You'll find it 19 kilometres away.

Are you into stopping at the Highfields Pioneer Village and the Spring Bluff Railway Station? They're right near the middle of Murphys Creek, 10 kilometres to the northwest. Alternatively, travel to Blanchview. It's 11 kilometres to the southwest of Helidon and regarded for Queens Park and the City Golf Club.

Laurel Bank Park, the Empire Theatre and the Cobb & Co Museum are all very close to Toowoomba, 18 kilometres to the west. Want a few more reasons to swing by? Japanese Gardens and Grand Central Shopping Centre are not far away either.

'There is no love sincerer than the love of food,' George Bernard Shaw once said, but throw travel into the mix and it's a match made in heaven. You're invited to combine your two loves by eating and drinking your way across Darling Downs.

Food here tends to include beef and bush tucker, two commonly used ingredients for which the area is famous for dishing up.

While Helidon is home to a range of culinary comforts, you shouldn't overlook salt and pepper squid and meat pie. Considered iconic local dishes, you'll have to put them on your must-try list if you truly want to taste this destination.

You won't need too much persuading to try peach melba, a dessert that'll make you want to move here.

You won't get the full travelling experience until you've tried the local beer. Whether you want to wet your whistle or get some liquid courage to mingle with new friends, order XXXX Summer Bright Lager.

When the night begs for something with more of a kick, try some Bundaberg Spiced Rum. On ice or neat — your bartender will know the nicest way to have it.

Be on the lookout for Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon and Riverina Chardonnay on the wine lists. They're popular local favourites for both vino savants and novices alike.

It's always sad when a holiday comes to an end. However, your time in the beautiful Darling Downs region will have made you richer, no matter how much of your holiday allowance remains.

Time to hit the skies? Pack your bags, set an alarm and map a route to Brisbane Airport (BNE). It's roughly 100 kilometres to the east.
