Holidays in Hikaba

Your last holiday feel like it was a lifetime ago? Simple — book a ticket to Hikaba and you'll be away in a jiffy!

It's situated 270 kilometres to the north of the nation's capital, Tokyo.

Head further afield of Hikaba and you'll encounter some wonderful natural sights. Just 40 kilometres away, Akiu Otaki Falls is a great place to get some fresh air. We also suggest Mt. Shinobu-yama, 35 kilometres away from Hikaba.

Are you wild about sports? Then you'll want to take a look at the event schedule at Fukushima Azuma Baseball Stadium, located 35 kilometres to the south in Fukushima.

Spend a leisurely day moving between the powdery snow and a roasting fire at Zao Hot Springs Ski Resort and Alts Bandai Ski Resort. From complete newbies to experts, there's something to keep everyone entertained at these snow-capped wonderlands.

The Takahata Winery and the Hirosuke Hamada Memorial Museum are not far from the middle of Takahata, 9 kilometres to the southwest. After more? Shichikashuku, 10 kilometres to the east of Hikaba, is proud to offer Shichikasyuku Ski Area and Mt. Fubosan.

Located 25 kilometres to the north, Yamagata is a destination that has plenty to offer. The Yamagata Museum of Science and Industry, Yamagata Castle and Yamagata City Local History Museum aren't that far away. Keep in mind, Nanukamachi Palaca Weir and Kajo Park may be more your thing.

Eating is among life's greatest pleasures, and since you're here, we guess you think travel is too. Combine your enthusiasm for both by venturing out and sampling the local food and beverage offerings at some of the bars, cafés and restaurants across town.

Curious about some of the traditional ingredients used in the local kitchens? Prepare to taste beef and noodles in a few of your meals.

Of course, you can't visit Hikaba without introducing your taste buds to tempura (deep fried seafood or vegetables) or jappa-jiru (fish gut and vegetable soup). Popular with residents and considered signature recipes, they are an essential experience for any food-loving adventurer.

Still got a bit of give in your waistband after your main meal? Then place an order for anpan (sweet roll), a moreish sweet treat.

For lovers of a decent pint, head to the nearest bar and request Asahi Premium Beer Jukusen. Enjoy it with a side of storytelling and mingling with the locals.

To really get the party going, order a shot of junmaishu. Drink it down neat or ask the bar person for mixer suggestions.

There's more to travelling than just ticking off sights and trying the local dishes. It's also about connecting with the people and their culture. Make the most of your Yamagata holiday by memorising a handful of words in the local tongue. 'Dōmo arigatō' can be very handy. It's how you say 'thank you'. Another one to remember is 'Oyasumi nasai', which means 'good night'.

If you've got the good luck to be in Hikaba on the 23rd of December, get ready to have a ball! Birthday of Emperor Akihito see many locals celebrating this auspicious date.

Before it's time to say "Sayōnara" to Hikaba, check your pockets for any spare change that you can spend on last-minute keepsakes.

With a bit of planning, making it to Narita International Airport (NRT), the nearest airport, won't be too difficult. It's about 250 kilometres to the south of downtown Hikaba.
