Holidays in Hongdae

Throw in your job, buy a ticket, fall in love, never come back. You don't need to do all those things, but one you should do is lock in that ticket to Hongdae. One of the many 'hoods of Seoul, it's a sensational base for sussing out all that this city has to offer. One of the best bits of travelling is the people you meet on the way. And with 10,300,000 people living in the capital of South Korea, there's tonnes of opportunities to make a few new BFFs. After hitting the tarmac and collecting your bags at Gimpo International Airport, your taxi will need to travel 11 kilometres east to get to Hongdae. From the heart of the city, it's a drive of 5 kilometres to the west.

This city isn't short on impressive things to do, and many of them can be found near Hongdae. It's a challenge to choose the best attractions, but Dongdaemun Market and Gyeongbok Palace are two you won't want to miss. Don't forget to put the National Museum and the Sungnyemun Gate on your checklist too. While you're here, consider going to a few other neighbourhoods to taste more of what Seoul has to offer. Mapo and Shinchon are great recommendations that are close by.

The COEX Convention and Exhibition Center is one of those attractions that needs to be seen to be believed. Just 9 kilometres from the centre of the city, you have no excuse to miss it.

If you wouldn't mind checking out the highlights in central Seoul, don't forget to include the Korea University and Deoksugung Palace. You can't go back to your hotel room without having a look around N Seoul Tower and the Jogyesa Temple as well.

Need a bit of time away from the kids? Find a babysitter and go to Korea House, Supsok Hanbang Land, the Seven Luck Casino Millennium Seoul Hilton Branch and sanmotoonge.

The area's various cultural attractions, such as the Sejong Cultural Center, the Gallery Hyundai, the Kukje Gallery and the Cheongwadae Sarangchae, cannot be missed!

Nothing quietens the mind and stirs the imagination like an afternoon in an art gallery. Indulge your curiosity as you study the thought-provoking works showcased at the Seoul Museum of Art, the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Seoul, the Artsonje Center and the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Deoksugung.

You never quite know what you'll discover when exploring the fascinating collections at the Modern Design Museum, the Ewha Womans University Museum, the Agriculture Museum and the Daelim Museum. If you don't want to miss a thing, don't be afraid to pick the brains of the friendly staff.

What nicer way to finish a day's activities than with a bite to eat, a few drinks and a show? Check the programme guides at the Chongdong Theater, the National Theater, the Seoul Namsan Gugakdang and the Hongdae Music Show Theatre.

Finding places for the kids is a top priority when embarking on a family holiday. Keep an eye open for Ssamji-gil, 63 SeaWorld, the Seoul Animation Center and the 63 Wax Museum.

Children have bucketloads of energy. Luckily, there are a number of places nearby you can take them to blow off some steam. Seodaemun Independence Park, SeaLaLa Spa & Water Park and Taehwa Bowling Center are some well-known choices.

Mt. Inwang and Baeksasil Valley are among the best places for nature fans to spend time outdoors.

Prepare a picnic and invite some friends down to have a chat in one of the vibrant green spaces nearby. You have a number of options, including Namsan Park, Yeouido Park, Tapgol Park and Sajik Park.

A trip away is the perfect opportunity to splash your cash and grab some gifts to take back home. Make sure you swing by Namdaemun Market, Lotte Department Store, Noryangjin Fish Market and Yongsan Electronics Market!

The War Memorial of Korea, Changgyong Palace, Changdeokgung Palace and the Sungkyunkwan University have so many stories to tell. History geek or not, you'll certainly find out something at these time-weathered sites.

If you're intrigued by different religions, you should visit Yoido Full Gospel Church, Jongmyo Shrine, Myeongdong Cathedral and Jeoldusan Martyrs Shrine.

No holiday here is complete without a visit to Seoul World Cup Stadium, home to the Korean Republic National Team and Seoul FC. If your visit coincides with a match, slip on your favourite team's colours and prepare to excitedly cheer them on.
