Holidays in Isa

Yep. We hear ya. Wanderlust — it gets right into your bones. So, isn't it time you booked your next adventure? Isa awaits!

It sits 940 kilometres southwest of Tokyo, the capital of Japan.

You may find some seashells to add to your collection as you take a leisurely walk along the shore at Miyazaki Waterfront Park.

The comforting sounds of nature are waiting for you at Kirishima-Kinkowan National Park. It's situated just 25 kilometres away, so you won't have to be stuck inside a car all day. Sogi Fall, 6 kilometres away, is another recommended choice.

On a clear, sunny day, Tadamoto Park is a great place for a picnic lunch and a spot of exercise.

Take a step back in time as you stroll around Sogi Power Station. This historical site has plenty of stories to tell.

The best snow is always in the morning, so make sure you set your alarm early the night before heading to Gokase Highland Ski & Snowboard.

If you're contemplating venturing further afield, go 18 kilometres northeast to Hitoyoshi. This is where you'll come across the Eikokuji and Aoi Aso Shrine. We also recommend going to Izumi, 25 kilometres to the west, for Hakozakihachiman Shrine and the Izumi City Crane Museum.

Want to go to the Kagoshima Botanical Garden, the Museum of the Meiji Restoration and the Nagashima Museum? Get moving to Kagoshima, 55 kilometres to the south, and set up camp. These sights, as well as Amu Plaza Kagoshima and Terukuni Shrine, are all not far away.

Whether you enjoy the sophistication of Michelin stars or gulping down a simple street snack, tasting the local food and drink is maybe the best thing about travel. So why not treat your taste buds by trying some of the region's appetising offerings?

This corner of the world has some unique recipes centred on local ingredients. You'll find beef and noodles are regularly used in many of the meals.

Looking for a traditional Isa dining experience? There are some specialty dishes to keep an eye out for, such as tempura (deep fried seafood or vegetables) and hakata ramen (noodles in pork bone soup).

You won't need too much persuading to try anpan (sweet roll), a sweet treat that'll make you want to settle down here for good.

If you've developed a thirst and want to indulge in a glass of amber nectar, we recommend Asahi Premium Beer Jukusen. Go out for happy hour, mingle with the locals and bottoms up!

Want to really get your night started? A couple of shots of junmaishu should do the trick! Neat, on ice, in a cocktail — doesn't matter!

Learning even just a few expressions in the local tongue will make your time in the Kagoshima region that little bit less challenging. Try to articulate 'お誕生日おめでとうございます(otanjōbi omedetō gozaimasu)'. It translates to 'happy birthday'. One more to keep in mind is 'Wakarimasen', which means 'I don't understand'.

There's bound to be a party atmosphere in the air around the 23rd of December. The locals will be getting themselves ready for Birthday of Emperor Akihito, a day of national celebrations.

Before you say "Sayōnara" to Isa, check your pockets for any stray change that you can spend on some last-minute mementos.

Kagoshima Airport (KOJ), the closest airport, is just 30 kilometres to the south from the middle of Isa. Plan a route, pack your bag and set your alarm clock — and don't hit the snooze button too many times!

"Pleasant stay overall. Buffet dinner and breakfast food is average, room is very dated. Onsen is nice, especially the private onsen and bedrock bath (with very reasonable fee)."
