History

In the 1800s, Kadavu was known for two things: it's whaling station and Vedori the pirate, who was infamous for ransacking passing ships in the waters around the islands. Thankfully, these days the locals are friendly and the marine life is protected, so you can enjoy your holiday without any worries.

Things to do

These peaceful islands only have one small town and have been blessed by Mother Nature. The star attraction is the 100km long Great Astrolabe Reef, one of the world's most famous dive spots. So strap on your scuba gear and go check out the amazing tropical fish and coral!

On the islands themselves, you can go jungle trekking and bird watching or visit isolated villages and cool off in picture-perfect waterfalls.

Cape Washington is the ultimate surfing destination in Fiji, so get out and enjoy the waves. If you'd prefer to just sit on the shores and watch the pros, you can find a shady spot and bunker down for the afternoon or climb up Mt Nabuhulevu – an inactive volcano – for some unreal views of the surf action.

This gorgeous island is practically untouched, so you won't find much in the way of shops around here. Pick up your essentials before you arrive and grab some souvenirs at the markets in Suva or Nadi before you fly back home.

When meal time rolls around, you'll be spoilt with the resort restaurant menus but you can also find a few restaurants scattered around the island offering traditional Fijian dishes. You’ll be treated to lots of fresh seafood and tropical fruit while you're here.

Getting here and around

To get to Fiji, you can jump on one of these cheap flights to Suva or take one of these flights to Nadi. From there, you can catch an internal flight to Kadavu. There's a weekly ferry service that runs from Suva to Kadavu but it's a seven hour journey through the night and it's not the most comfortable trip, so grab a quick internal flight if you can.
