Holidays in Kamina

Yep. Papua New Guinea is kinda off the beaten track. But hey, who wants to follow the tourist trail anyway? Besides, there's so much to enjoy in this stunning region (not least of all its picturesque rural landscapes and beaches). Set up base in Kamina and you can check it all out from there.

It's situated 400 kilometres northwest of Port Moresby, the capital city of Papua New Guinea.

Lake Kutubu, 20 kilometres away, is one of the best places to go if you're after some fresh air and some time in Mother Nature. It's certainly worth the journey.

The J.K. McCarthy Museum and the Raun Raun Theatre aren't far from the centre of Goroka, 25 kilometres to the north of Kamina. Why not go there and take a look?

Turn your holiday in the region into a real adventure with a day of mountain climbing or hiking. They're both very popular outdoor activities here.

How about hopping on some guided nature walks and wildlife spotting tours? Chat with your friendly tour guide as you experience all that the region has on offer.

Indulge in one of your hobbies or have a shot at something new on the waters around Papua New Guinea. There are plenty of exciting watersports on offer, including swimming and snorkeling.

Check out what's happening at the region's craft workshops. There are a few to select from, so it's well worth doing some research!

We'd be hard-pressed to think of a nicer way to appreciate the local area than by visiting its open-air markets.

Travel back in time by visiting some nearby war relics and monuments. When it comes to understanding the historical significance of these structures, a well-versed tour guide can make all the difference.

To really experience a place is to try the local food and drink, so get ready to gnaw, nibble, sip and swig your way around Papua New Guinea. The only thing you need to take with you is a solid appetite!

Are you wondering about some of the surprises that'll land on your dinner plate? There's a high chance they'll include breadfruit (ulu), coconuts or both.

Ask one of the locals what dish best represents the region and chicken pot will likely be the first thing they point you to. Kokoda fish is another local classic you'll want to try.

You won't need too much persuading to order some saksak (dumplings made with sugar and sago), a treat that'll make you want to start a new life here.

There's bound to be an air of fever and excitement leading up to the 16th of September. The locals will be making preparations for Independence Day, a day of national celebrations.

Time to pack your belongings and head home? Watch the sunset for the last time in the fantastic Papua New Guinea region before you have to say goodbye.

When it's time to fly off, give yourself plenty of time to get to Jackson International Airport (POM). Located 400 kilometres to the southeast from Kamina, this is the closest terminal.
