Holidays in Kando

When chucking a sickie becomes your new norm, it's time to escape the corporate cubicle and say hello to Kando!

It lies 220 kilometres to the west of Tokyo, the capital city of Japan.

Venture beyond Kando and you'll be rewarded with some lovely natural sights. Just 18 kilometres away, Enakyo Prefectural Natural Park is a great place to unwind in the fresh air. Also consider exploring Nezame no Toko, 35 kilometres away from Kando.

Whether you aspire to perfect your turns or simply have fun and stay in one piece, Gifu has the slopes for you. You can choose from Heavens Sonohara Snow World or Ontake 2240 Ski Resort.

How do you like the sound of Naegi Castle Ruins and the Nakatsugawa Children's Science Museum? These awesome sights are in Nakatsugawa, just 15 kilometres southeast of Kando. Or perhaps Jindonooka Park and the Chiune Sugihara Memorial Hall are more your thing? To see them, travel to Hichiso-cho, 20 kilometres to the southwest.

Want to visit the Onsenji Temple, Gero Onsen Gassho Village and Shitajima Onsen? Get moving to Gero, 25 kilometres to the north, and set up base. These attractions, as well as Sarubobo Shrine and the Senshoji Temple, are all not far away.

Tingle your taste buds and fill your Instagram feed with drool-worthy pics by sampling some of this destination's richest food and drink offerings. Just don't forget to hashtag 'yum'!

Typical food here tends to include beef and noodles, two essential elements for which the local area is famous for serving up.

Anpan (sweet roll) is a dessert that sums up this place in just one mouthful. Put in an order for a serving and then come back for more!

To beer or not to beer? Of course, the answer should always be beer. While you're in this corner of the world, Asahi Premium Beer Jukusen is the name to say.

Prefer something with a little more bite? Then you'll want to try junmaishu. Ask the bartender if it's tasty in any mixed drinks or cocktails. If that fails, raise your shot glass and drink it neat!

You're going all the way to Kando, so why not put in a little extra effort to practise a couple of words in the local language? It will make your whole experience all the more special. Try to get your lips around 'Gokoūn o inorimasu'. It translates to 'good luck'. Perhaps you'll find 'お誕生日おめでとうございます(otanjōbi omedetō gozaimasu)' a little bit easier to say? This means 'happy birthday'.

If you've got the good luck to be in Kando on the 23rd of December, get ready to party! Birthday of Emperor Akihito sees many of the locals heading out and celebrating.

"Sayōnara" doesn't have to mean farewell forever. Why not put away a few Japanese yens for your next holiday?

When it's time to take to the skies, make sure you have extra time to reach Chubu Centrair International Airport (NGO). Sitting 100 kilometres to the southwest from the middle of Kando, this is the nearest terminal.

"We liked the convenience to station and quietness. The staff were lovely. We would have preferred without the music on a short monotonous loop in the corridors from 6.30 and in the public bath but that was a minor issue. Overall a great experience"
