A visit to Katherine spells adventure. Often referred to as the ‘Crossroads of the North’ it embraces the borders of the Northern Territory, Queensland and Western Australia and also sits along the Katherine River from which it gets its name. The outback meets the tropics in Katherine and offers the best of the Northern Territory’s natural treasures from national parks to beautiful bushland. Why not check out our Katherine hotels and start exploring everything this beautiful region has to offer.
Katherine will give you an unforgettable taste of the top end as you swim, kayak or sail along the scenic Katherine Gorge, part of the Natmiluk National Park. For a truly unique cultural experience, you can even walk along bare cliffs that plunge into the deepest rivers, treading in the footsteps of Australia’s Aboriginal ancestors, or visit Pine Creek, a gold mining hub in the 1800s. For something more relaxing visit the tropical Mataranka and soak your tootsies in hot thermal pools.
The best time to visit Katherine is during the dry season from April to September. Many parts of Katherine Gorge are only available for swimmers during this time and the climate is milder with temps in the low 30oC.
While the natural delights, including the very rare bats and salt water crocs, will have you transfixed, you can also indulge in some art and culture at the Katherine Museum, Old Train Station and the Springvale Homestead. For some shopping, head to the local arts and crafts stalls in the town centre where you can take a piece of Katherine home with you.
If you want to visit Katherine, why not arrive in style via the Ghan Railway, which has been traversing from Adelaide to Darwin for over 80 years and crosses some of the most amazing scenery the outback can muster.
Hopping on a Greyhound bus is another way to get to Katherine however, the easiest way is to drive from Darwin or Alice Springs so you can really get amongst it and explore all the nooks and crannies. Even better take a tour and get someone else to drive you! So take to the top end and book from our range of Katherine accommodation options below.
