Holidays in Katori-shi

Yep. We understand. Wanderlust — it gets right into your bones. So, isn't it about time you planned your next adventure? Katori-shi awaits!

It lies 70 kilometres east of Tokyo, the country's capital.

Put aside some time for walking along the shore and admiring ocean views at Kawarago Beach or Funabashi Sanbanze Ocean Park.

You don't have to be stuck on the road all day to experience some nature. Just 45 kilometres out of Katori-shi, Izumi Natural Park is a superb place to get a breath of fresh air. More picturesque surrounds await at Hakuchonosato, 25 kilometres away.

Leave your smartphone in the car and enjoy the calming sights and sounds of Gongenyama Park and Sawara Park.

In search of a little serenity? Why not visit a few of the region's spiritual grounds? Begin your day at Suwa Shrine, then stop by Yasaka Shrine or Katori Jingu.

Take an afternoon off to indulge in a bit of retail therapy at Mini-no-Eki Kurimo and Benikomachi no Sato or Road Station Mizunosato Sawara.

Are you looking for some exhilarating soccer action? Then watch the Kashima Antlers fight it out with the opposition on their home turf of Kashima Soccer Stadium, which is 16 kilometres away in Mito.

There's even more to see and do just around the corner. Kozaki-machi, 9 kilometres to the west, is known for Komikado Shrine and the Ryoshoin Namekawa Kannon Temple. Alternatively, if Kashima Jingu and Road Station Itako are more appealing, go 9 kilometres northeast from Katori-shi to Itako.

Keen to visit Kamui Ryugasaki Snowboard Park, Ushiku Nature Sanctuary and Chateau Kamiya? Then head to Ushiku, 30 kilometres away. The Ushiku Daibutsu and Ami Premium Outlets are also conveniently close and should be on your travel plan.

Dazzle your taste buds and fill your Instagram with drool-worthy pics by digging into some of this destination's most delectable food and drink offerings. Just be sure to hashtag 'yum'!

If you're thumbing through a menu, there's every chance you'll see meals featuring beef or noodles. They're some ingredients typically used in the cooking here.

Ask one of the locals for their food recommendations and tempura (deep fried seafood or vegetables) will probably be among the first things they advise. Sushi (raw seafood on vinegar rice) is another iconic local food you might like to tuck into.

You might be eating yourself into a food coma, but anpan (sweet roll) is more than worth it. This well-liked dessert will have your taste buds tingling at the sight of it.

It can be hard to separate the wheat from the chaff when it comes to quality beers, but one brew worth tossing back is Asahi Premium Beer Jukusen. Grab a glass and bottoms up!

Want to get the party going? A shot of junmaishu should do the trick! On the rocks or neat — the choice is yours!

Your visit to Katori-shi will certainly be more fun if you put in a little effort to memorise a few of the local phrases and expressions. 'Konbanwa' translates as 'good evening'. 'Konnichiwa' ('hello') is another one you might need.

Food, art and music — national celebrations showcase the best of what a country has to offer. Remember to join in with the locals on Birthday of Emperor Akihito on the 23rd of December.

Before you say "Sayōnara" to Katori-shi, check to see if you have any remaining change that you can spend on some last-minute keepsakes.

Narita International Airport (NRT), the closest airport, is around 17 kilometres to the southwest from the centre of Katori-shi. Map out a route, pack your suitcase and set an alarm clock — and make sure you don't hit the snooze button too many times!
