Holidays in Keningau

We get it! Your boss is on your back and you need to get away, right? So why not use some annual leave and suss out the stunning rural landscapes, beaches, forests and jungle of Sabah. Just base yourself in Keningau and take it from there.

From Keningau, head around 160 kilometres west and you'll arrive in the well-known city of Bandar Seri Begawan.

You don't have to be stuck in a car all day to see a bit of nature. Just 30 kilometres out of Keningau, Crocker Range National Park is a favourite spot to fill your lungs with fresh air. More tranquil surrounds are waiting for you at Sabah Agricultural Park, 40 kilometres away.

Like to venture outwards a little? Tambunan is 40 kilometres to the north of Keningau and Papar is 45 kilometres to the northwest. Hop in the car and discover what's happening out there!

Do a little shopping and visit some sights in Kampong Gaya. This place is 80 kilometres away and not far from Centre Point, All Saint's Cathedral and Sutera Harbour. That said, you won't want to miss Tunku Abdul Rahman Park and Kota Kinabalu Central Market either.

It's hard to think of a better way to see the surrounding landscapes than on a stimulating adventure. Join in on some mountain biking or mountain climbing and get your heart pumping!

You certainly won't need to take that heavy guidebook if you choose to go on some guided nature walks and wildlife spotting tours. Your reputable tour guide will have the most reliable local knowledge around!

Step off terra firma and experience Sabah from another angle. With several fun-filled activities like swimming and snorkeling to try, it's a great playground for water enthusiasts.

You're bound to find a range of treasures in the region's nature museums.

Would you like to spend some time outside? Consider planning an outing to one of the surrounding area's open-air markets.

Whether you prefer the stylishness of Michelin stars or devouring a simple street snack, tasting the local food and drink is maybe the best thing about travel. So why not give your taste buds a treat by tucking into some of the area's mouthwatering offerings?

Of course, you can't visit Keningau without sampling pinasakan sada (braised fish with fruit) or hinava (seasoned raw mackerel). Popular with residents and considered signature dishes, they are an essential experience for anyone with an interest in food.

Your visit to the Sabah region is certain to be much more fulfilling if you make the effort to memorise a couple of the local phrases and expressions. 'Boleh cakap perlahan sedikit?' is how you say 'please speak more slowly'. There's also 'Nama saya ...' ('I am from..').

Celebrated throughout the whole country, Independence Day occurs on the 31st of August. If you find yourself here at this time, it'll be hard not to get swept up in all the excitement!

Like all good things in life, your trip to Keningau will eventually come to an end. When it's time to pack up your belongings, say one last "Sampai nanti" and spend your remaining holiday allowance on some special souvenirs.

If you'll be travelling by air, you'll likely be using Brunei International Airport (BWN). It's 160 kilometres to the west. Pack your bags, find the best route and set an alarm!
