Holidays in Kogal

We get it! The sound of that plane overhead released the traveller within, right? Then a trip to Kogal might just sort you out! From here, you'll be able to venture off the tourist trail a little and explore the lovely beaches and coastal plains of South Chungcheong.

It's 140 kilometres to the south of Seoul, the country's capital.

You won't have to be on the road all day to witness a bit of nature. Just 45 kilometres out of Kogal, Gyeryongsan National Park is a lovely place to enjoy some fresh air. More delightful surrounds await at Geumgang Natural Recreation Forest, 50 kilometres away.

Seeking even more awesome attractions? Head to Buyeo, 13 kilometres east of Kogal, for Seongheungsanseong Fortress and Busosanseong. Alternatively, Cheongyang is 19 kilometres to the northeast, and it's here you'll come across Cheongyang Bowlingjang and Jangseung Park.

Travellers and locals alike often head over to Jeonju. This place is 60 kilometres to the southeast and pretty close to the Gyeonggijeon, the Jeonju Historical Museum and the Jeonju National Museum. If you're planning to stay a while, don't forget about the Pungnammun Gate and Jeondong Catholic Church.

Mountain climbing and hiking are both very popular with the locals. These outdoor pastimes will allow you to see this awesome region from a completely different perspective.

If the kids are tired of all the sightseeing, why not take them out for a leisurely day of shore fishing or picnicking?

If you get caught in some miserable weather, run for cover in one of the region's history museums and craft workshops.

Relax your mind with the help of some lovely outdoor attractions. The surrounding area offers visitors a nice assortment of open-air exhibits.

Those with an interest in history will want to visit the region's old towns and fortresses. If that's you, do a little research and choose one to visit first.

If you'd like an experience that goes beyond the physical world, consider checking out one or two temples and shrines. It's a great opportunity to learn a bit about Kogal's spiritual beliefs.

Would you like to nibble, nip, chomp, chew and swig your way through South Chungcheong? A world of tempting flavours awaits you here, so slip into your stretchiest slacks and bon appétit!

Looking for some insight into the local cuisine? We suggest getting a taste for beans and mushrooms, two essential ingredients which go into lots of dishes here.

When the locals talk to you about their favourite foods, it's likely you'll hear eoriguljeot (oysters with chili) or bibimbap (sautéed vegetables on rice) uttered a few times. These well-loved dishes form part of the area's identity and should be on any food lover's list.

You won't need too much convincing to have a nibble of bungeo-ppang (red bean filled pastry), a sweet treat that'll make you want to pack everything up and settle down here.

Life's not all beer and skittles, but there's definitely nothing wrong with indulging in a cold one on occasion. While you're in this neck of the woods, make sure it's Prime Max.

When the night calls for something with a little more bite, order some cheongju (rice wine). Neat or on the rocks — the bar person should know the best way to drink it.

Food, art and music — national celebrations reveal the best of what a country has to offer. Be sure to join in on the festivities on Liberation Day on the 15th of August.

If you're catching a plane home, it's a wise idea to map out a route to the terminal beforehand. From the centre of Kogal, you'll need to journey around 45 kilometres south to Gunsan Airport (KUV), the nearest airport.
