Holidays in Komola

Been burning the candle at both ends? Dying for a break and a few quiet nights? Komola might just be the answer. It sits among the forests, rivers, streams and lakes of Kaluga Oblast — nice and not too touristy. (We reckon you'll feel so relaxed, you'll be under the blankets by sunset!)

It's situated 150 kilometres southwest of Moscow, the capital city of Russia.

Interested in visiting Victory Square and the Kaluga State Drama Theatre? They're close to the centre of Bushmanovka, 20 kilometres to the west. Alternatively, you could go to Kaluga. It's 25 kilometres to the west of Komola and popular for the Museum of Workmanship Architecture and Daily Life and the Kaluga Regional Art Museum.

Serpukhov, 70 kilometres to the northeast, may be right up your alley. You can use it as a port of call when stopping by Vysotsky Monastery, the Serpukhov Music and Drama Theatre and Church of St. Nicholas. If you'd like more persuading, other close by attractions include Church of All Saints and the Serpukhov's Museum of History and Art.

A couple of hours outside can quieten the mind. If you're feeling on edge, why not slow down the pace and go shore fishing or picnicking?

The region's art museums, history museums and theaters offer something for people of all ages. Take a look inside and see what's going on.

If it's not raining cats and dogs, why don't you explore the surrounding area's open-air exhibits and gardens?

Take a journey back in time with a stop at the area's old towns. When it comes to understanding the historical significance of these structures, an expert tour guide can offer some deeper insight.

Familiarise yourself with the area's spiritual dimension by paying a visit to its churches, cathedrals, temples and monasteries. Take some time out for your own quiet contemplation or simply observe the locals in prayer.

Your eyes shouldn't get to have all the fun while visiting Kaluga Oblast. Give your taste buds a little lovin' too by indulging in the local food and drink. After all, you haven't truly experienced a destination until you've tasted its flavours.

Once you grab a table and browse a restaurant or café menu, you'll discover that rye and oats are some ingredients commonly used in local cooking.

Holiday calories don't count, right? So it's an ideal excuse to treat yourself to lymonnyk (lemon pie), a favourite dessert.

To beer or not to beer? Of course, the answer is always beer. When you're in this neck of the woods, Baltika Premium Lager is the one you want.

Make good use of your transit time by practising some expressions in Russian. To start, try to get your tongue around 'Xotite potancevat?'. It means 'would you like to dance?'. 'Dobroe utro!', which means 'good morning', is another one you may need.

Do you plan to be here on the 12th of June? You're in luck. Every year on this day, the whole country comes together for Russia Day.

You may be poor in Russian rubles when your holiday comes to an end, but you'll be rich in extraordinary experiences. "Uvidimsya pozzhe" Komola!

When it's time to fly home, give yourself plenty of time to head to Vnukovo International Airport (VKO). Situated 130 kilometres to the north from Komola, this is the nearest terminal.
