Holidays in Kuaotunu

Can't sleep? Keep throwing your leg in and out of the doona? Could be that intrepid spirit of yours! So what are you waiting for? Get up, grab your passport and book a trip to Kuaotunu!

The country's capital, Wellington, sits roughly 510 kilometres to the south of Kuaotunu.

Orewa Beach and Onetangi Beach are perfect to visit if you feel like somewhere to kick back and relax.

You won't have to travel for hours to take in some outstanding natural sights. Load up the car and follow the road to Mount Paku, 30 kilometres away from Kuaotunu, for a relaxing day. Or perhaps Stony Batter Historic Reserve is more your cup of tea? It's located just 50 kilometres away.

Make sure you visit Kuaotunu Beach for a pleasant afternoon out.

Are you thinking of visiting Buffalo Beach and Cooks Beach? They're not far from the middle of Whitianga, 10 kilometres to the south. Alternatively, you could travel to Ferry Landing. It's 11 kilometres to the south of Kuaotunu and well-known for Hahei Beach and Cathedral Cove.

Approximately 50 kilometres to the south, Thames is a place chock-full with activities. Goldfields Shopping Centre, the Thames Historical Museum and Butterfly and Orchid Garden are all pretty close. Keep in mind, the School of Mines & Mineralogical Museum and the Goldmine Experience may be more your thing.

There is no better way to experience a place than to literally take a bite out of it! You're invited to explore the culture, history and personality of Coromandel Peninsula by dining on some of its most fabulous food and drink.

Typical fare here often includes seafood and pork, two essential elements for which the area is known for plating up.

Of course, you can't go to Kuaotunu without sinking your teeth into whitebait or hāngi (traditional Maori meat and vegetables). Popular with residents and considered regional classics, they are a must-try experience for any self-respecting foodie.

It probably won't take much to persuade you to have a nibble of hokey pokey (honeycomb-vanilla ice cream), a dessert that'll make you want to pack up your bags and start a new life here.

Celebrated throughout the entire country, Waitangi Day happens each year on the 6th of February. If you find yourself here during this important day, it'll be difficult not to get swept up in all the excitement!

Time spent in the picturesque Coromandel Peninsula region is an extraordinary experience, and hopefully it will have touched you with its magic. But alas, there must come a time to say goodbye.

Getting to your plane on time can be stressful. That being said, it won't be too bad if you've made a plan. The nearest terminal, Auckland International Airport (AKL), is 90 kilometres to the west.
