Holidays in Kuzakicho

When your boss is on your back cos you've chucked too many sickies, it's time to escape the corporate treadmill and say hello to Kuzakicho!

It sits 290 kilometres southwest of Tokyo, the capital of Japan.

You might encounter some seashells to add to your collection while enjoying a stroll along the shoreline at Koijigahama Beach.

You won't have to be stuck in a car all day to see some nature around these parts. Just 16 kilometres out of Kuzakicho, Married Couple Rocks is a fabulous place to get a breath of fresh air. Even more peaceful surrounds await at Mt. Asama, 13 kilometres away.

For a bit of exercise and the opportunity to shoot some great holiday snaps, go for a wander around Toba Observatory.

Can't live without sports? Then you'll want to check the event schedule at Sun Arena, located 16 kilometres to the northwest in Ise.

The Gankozan Kozoji Temple and the Kongoshoji Temple are close to the middle of Toba, 10 kilometres to the northwest. After more? Shima, 13 kilometres to the southwest of Kuzakicho, is known for Ise-Shima National Park and Daiosaki Lighthouse.

You may get the urge to stay in Ise for a little while. This destination is 20 kilometres to the northwest and pretty close to Ise Shrine, Ozaki Gakudo Memorial House and the Okageza Museum. Some other nearby sights are Okage Row and Sarutahiko Shrine.

There's no better way to understand a place than to literally take a big bite out of it! You're invited to explore Mie by tasting some of its most fabulous food and drink.

Curious about some of the standard ingredients used in cooking here? Prepare to taste beef and noodles in quite a few of your meals.

You don't need to agonise over the menu when you're in Kuzakicho. Just jump straight in and pick some of the region's most loved dishes, such as tempura (deep fried seafood or vegetables) and yudofu (tofu simmered with kelp).

'Stressed' spelled backwards is 'desserts', and that's no coincidence. There's no more delightful way to say goodbye to your worries than with anpan (sweet roll), a sweet treat often found on dinner tables here.

If you really want to see the big pitcher, grab the hopportunity to toss down a beer. The schooner the better! Cheesy beer puns aside, don't forget to taste test Asahi Premium Beer Jukusen, one of the most popular local brews.

If the evening begs for something with a little more zing, ask for junmaishu. Neat or on the rocks — your barkeeper should know the best way to drink it.

Start knocking down that old language barrier by learning to say a few greetings and expressions in the local tongue. You'll gain a more fulfilling experience and some new buddies while you're at it! You may be glad you learnt 'Isshoni odorimasenka?', which means 'would you like to dance?'. One more common phrase is 'Oyasumi nasai' ('good night').

Before you say your final "後でお会いしましょう (Atode o ai shimashou)" to Kuzakicho, check your pockets for any stray change that you can spend on some last-minute souvenirs.

Kuzakicho's closest terminal is Chubu Centrair International Airport (NGO). When it's time to pack up your suitcase and take off, go 50 kilometres to the north.
