We booked this cottage based on the glowing reviews. I’ve always counted on vrbo to guide me to book rental properties and have never had an issue. I booked this cottage thinking that it would be a comfortable place to hang out for 3 nights to end our trip up north.
The main issue we had was that my boys, ages 9 and 12, were playing around near the crib and noticed quite a few tiny bugs INSIDE the crib mattress. I have to assume these were bed bugs. I checked the other beds’ mattresses and didn’t see anything, but we couldn’t shake the fact that there were bed bugs in the crib.
We left the house to get dinner and I messaged the owner, who promptly replied and said he would remove the crib mattress, which supposedly was brought in by someone else, and check the other mattresses. He told us the other mattresses were fine, but at that point, after reading about bed bugs and knowing that they don’t necessarily stay in one spot and could infest our luggage, we decided to pack up all of our suitcases and find a hotel instead.
So that was 3 nights of rental money just wasted. The owner said we weren’t entitled to a refund and VRBO said it was at the discretion of the owner. So we unfortunately likely won’t be able to recoup that money. I understand that it was our choice to leave the property, but I’m not sure how we could be expected to sleep in a place after we’ve seen bedbugs.
Disappointed in this experience for sure.
