While lastminute.com.au has a seriously impressive list of Taiwan hotels, you unfortunately won't find anywhere to crash in or around Lanyu.

But there's no need to freak out. Lyudao is located approximately 70 kilometres away and offers some excellent accommodations, including the Sanasai Inn and Toong Hsiang Hotel.

Still haven't uncovered your ideal room? You might just find a soft enough thread count in Hengchun. You'll also be able to explore the Shell Sand Exhibition Hall and Dajian Mountain. The Chateau Beach Resort and Howard Villa are just some of the hotel options here. Or, you could consider staying in Checheng, 85 kilometres to the west of Lanyu, where you can pick from the S. Fennel Villa and Country Lane Hostel. The Shihmen Historic Battlefield and the Hengchun Old Town North Gate are just some of the most popular sites to experience when you're in Checheng.

Go 90 kilometres northwest and you'll find Taitung, a regional centre with a population of 110,000. While you're checking out this neck of the woods, you'll be able to hang your camera 'round your neck and get your tourist on at Makabahai Park, Righteousness Road Night Market and the National Taitung University. If you've got some time up your sleeve, keep the good times rolling with a visit to Donghai Sports Park and Beinan Wenhua Park.
