Hotels In Nice
Although it’s pronounced "Niece", Nice sure is nice! Also known as the "Treasure of the Cote d'Azur", it’s the capital of the French Riviera and is best known for its beaches and fabulous dining. Stay in one of our Nice hotels and have a really nice time at the beach in France.
HistorySince 350BC, Nice has seen Greek and Roman settlers, but it didn't officially become part of France until 1860, thanks to Napoleon III. Nice's location and the locals' hospitable nature make it quite unique as a French city. In fact, being so close to the Italian border, it has a bit of an Italian feel to it and travelers usually feel really comfortable and welcome here, so you're bound to enjoy your time.
Things to doAs soon as you arrive, drop your bags in your hotel and go for a walk along Promenade des Anglais. This waterfront esplanade is the jewel in Nice's crown and has been here since 1822. The views are nice any time of day or night, but they're absolutely spectacular at sunset, so make sure you get a front row seat, and enjoy a glass of French Champagne right on the waterfront!
After spending some time at the beach, hotfoot it to the next best part of town, Vieux Nice. This is the Old Town and has looked much the same since the 18th century, so history buffs will be in heaven here. In the Old Town, you'll find Cathédral Ste-Réparate, a cathedral from the 17th century devoted to the city's patron saint; the Palais Lascaris, a 17th century baroque style mansion with a pharmacy from the 18th century; and the Chapelle de la Miséricorde, an 18th century chapel with magnificent murals inside.
For stunning views of the city, head up to the Parc du Château and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of the park where a castle once stood. If you'd prefer to actually see one of Nice's old fortresses, pay a visit to the Fort Du Mont Alban, which was built in the 16th century and is still intact. If you're here when the weather's good, you might even be able to spot Corsica in the distance!
Art lovers will enjoy wandering around the Musée Matisse, admiring Henri Matisse's work. You can even visit his grave site at the cemetery across the road from the museum.
EventsThe Nice Carnival is a two-week-long event held in February, since 1294. It gets pretty wild, with fancy costumes, parades, floats, flower battles, bartender races and fireworks. Make sure that you head to the Promenade des Anglais for the main event on the last night of the festival - the burning of the king - when a paper maché king is set on fire out at sea. Not only does this burning ceremony mark the end of the celebrations, it also signifies the beginning of Lent.
Shopping and diningThe best shopping experience in Nice is to be had at the cours Saleya market square in the Old Town. There's a flower market and a fruit and vegetable market every day, plus an antiques market on Mondays. To get a genuine local grocery shopping experience, you can also wander along some of the tiny laneways in the Old Town, like Rue de la Boucherie, or hold your nose and hit up the fish market at Place St François.
Spending time in Nice is synonymous with fine French dining. Some of the country's best restaurants can be found here and you'll be able to indulge in gastronomic delights in even the smallest of restaurants. Perhaps consider packing a bigger pair of jeans, just in case.
Getting here and aroundTo get here, nab one of these cheap flights to Nice. Once you've arrived, you can get around town on buses, visit Corsica by boat or explore nearby towns like Cannes and Monaco by jumping aboard the train.
