It's situated 240 kilometres to the north of the country's capital, Tokyo.

The splendour of Mother Nature is on show around Machi-niwasaka. Just 35 kilometres away, Mount Bandai is an excellent place to start. Higashiyama Dam sits 50 kilometres away and is another delightful spot to enjoy some peace and quiet.

Do you feel like a bit of exercising? Burn off some of those travel calories with a stroll around Hanamiyama Parl. You can also have a look around for native plants and small animals at the Jorakuen.

Sports supporters don't need to worry about being left out in the cold during their stay. Fukushima Azuma Baseball Stadium is 5 kilometres away in Fukushima and a superb place to get your sporting fill. Don't forget to check the event calendar to see what's on.

There's nothing better than rising with the sun making your mark on a pristine slope at Zao Hot Springs Ski Resort. After you've conquered all the trails there, pack up your skis or snowboard and see what's on offer at Alts Bandai Ski Resort.

If you're thinking about venturing further afield, journey 2 kilometres north to Fukushima. It's here you'll come across Mt. Shinobu-yama and Horikiri House. We also recommend trying out Koori, 14 kilometres to the northeast, for the Fukushima Prefectural Museum of Art and the Nakano Fudoson.

Want to visit Bandai 3D World, Goshikinuma Lakes and the Bandaisan Onsen? Head to Kitashiobara, 30 kilometres to the west, and set up base. These sights, as well as the Herb Space Bandia and Lake Hibara, are all close.

There's a world full of unique flavours waiting to meet your taste buds in Fukushima. With plenty of mouthwatering things to nibble on, all you need to bring along is a solid appetite — and perhaps a pair of stretchy trousers.

This corner of the world has some unique recipes based on local tastes and traditional ingredients. You'll find beef and noodles are two typical elements in much of the fare.

There's always a local meal or two you absolutely have to try, and while you're in Machi-niwasaka, tempura (deep fried seafood or vegetables) is among them. Jappa-jiru (fish gut and vegetable soup) is some more traditional fare that's sure to make an impression.

If you're not one to say no to dessert, you're not going to be disappointed. Make sure you try anpan (sweet roll), a scrumptious treat that's guaranteed to satisfy your sweet tooth.

If you've developed a thirst and would like to indulge in a glass of amber nectar, we recommend Asahi Premium Beer Jukusen. Visit during happy hour, make some new friends and soak up the atmosphere!

Neat or on ice — your bartender will know the nicest way to have junmaishu. When the night begs for something with a bigger kick, it should be the first drink you order!

Don't let any cultural barriers get in the way of a good time! Make your trip to Fukushima a more engaging one by memorising a couple of phrases in the local language. To start, have a go at saying 'Ikura desu ka?'. It translates to 'how much is this?'. One more to add to the memory bank is 'Konbanwa', meaning 'good evening'.

Pencil the 23rd of December in your schedule. To the locals, this means just one thing — Birthday of Emperor Akihito. A notable day of celebrations, this is a marvellous time to head to the country.

Like all good things in life, your time here must eventually come to an end. When it's time to pack up your belongings, say "後でお会いしましょう (Atode o ai shimashou)" and spend your remaining holiday allowance on some unique keepsakes.

When the time arrives to pack your suitcase and take off, the closest terminal, Narita International Airport (NRT), is 220 kilometres to the south.
