Even on a holiday, it can be hard to get away from all of modern life's little stresses. If you want to clear away some of the cobwebs from your mind, leave your phone in the car and explore the lovely scenery of the Mae Fa Luang Botanical Garden.
There's even more just down the road. Mae Sai, 12 kilometres to the north, is popular for the Wat Phra That Wai Dao and Mae Sai Shrine. Alternatively, if the Wat Phra That Doi Wao and the Mae Sai Temple are more appealing, travel 25 kilometres north from Mae Rai to Tachilek.
The Wat Phra Kaew, the Wat Pra Singh and the Wat Phra That Doi Chom Thong are all quite close to Chiang Rai, 40 kilometres to the south. Want a few more excuses to call in? Central Plaza Chiangrai and the King Meng Rai the Great Monument aren't far away either.
Eating is among life's greatest pleasures, and since you're reading this, we guess you think travel is too. Combine your love of both by getting out and tasting the food and drink offerings at a handful of the cafés, bars and restaurants in town.
If you're scanning a menu, there's a good chance you'll see dishes featuring vietnamese coriander or culantro. They're two ingredients which are commonly used in the cuisine here.
There's always a local meal or two you must try, and during your time in Mae Rai, khao kan chin (steamed pork blood and rice) is certainly among them. Khanom chin nam ngiao (rice with pork blood sauce) is another iconic dish that's not to be missed.
Try to impress your hosts by taking the time to learn an expression or two in the local tongue. 'Mâi khâo jai' means 'I don't understand'. There's also 'Yin dee têe dâi róo jàk' ('pleased to meet you').
Food, art and music — national celebrations show off the best of what a country has to offer. Remember to join in with the locals on Birthday of King Phumiphon on the 5th of December.
