Holidays in Mae Salit

Been diagnosed with a bad case of the travel bug? Relax — we've got the perfect cure. Book a ticket to Mae Salit and you'll be feeling a hundred percent in no time!

The prominent city of Chiang Mai Province is situated within reach of Mae Salit. You can find this major centre 180 kilometres to the north.

Bhumipol Dam, 19 kilometres away, is the perfect place to go if you want some fresh air and a peaceful afternoon. It's well worth the drive.

If you head 25 kilometres south from Mae Salit, you'll reach Tak. Lots of travellers like to use this destination as a base to check out the Wat Bot Mani Si Bunrueang and City Pillar Shrine of the Four Great Kings.

'There is no love sincerer than the love of food,' according to George Bernard Shaw, but add travel to the mix and it's a marriage made in heaven. You're invited to combine your two loves by eating and drinking your way through Tak.

A typical ingredient in the cuisine here is vietnamese coriander. One more is culantro. They're worth giving a try if they're not a part of your food repertoire already.

On the hunt for an iconic Mae Salit dining experience? There are some specialty dishes to watch out for, such as khao kan chin (steamed pork blood and rice) and khanom chin nam ngiao (rice with pork blood sauce).

Make an effort to knock down that old language barrier by learning to say a couple of words and phrases in the local tongue. You'll gain a more enriching experience and some new buddies while you're at it! 'Kŏr hâi dern taang doi sà-wàt-dì-pâap' means 'have a nice trip'. There's also 'Chai-yoh' ('cheers/good health!').

If you're thinking of visiting Mae Salit in December, you'll want to be here around the 5th for Birthday of King Phumiphon. There's always a buzz of excitement in the air coming up to this day of national celebration.

Like all good things in life, your time here must eventually come to an end. When it's time to pack up your belongings and head off, say one last "Læ̂w phb kạn h̄ım̀" and spend your leftover holiday allowance on some postcards to take home.

If you'll be travelling via air, you'll likely go through Chiang Mai International Airport (CNX). It's 180 kilometres to the north. Pack your bag, plan out a route and set your alarm!
