Holidays in Maima

Had enough of being an armchair traveller? Keen to experience the real deal? Maima is the perfect place to start. You'll find it among the stunning forests, rivers and streams of Altai Republic. (You'll have to sidestep the well-trodden tourist trail, but that's what travelling is all about, right?)

The nation's capital, Moscow, can be found around 3,100 kilometres to the northwest of Maima.

Be sure to head to other nearby attractions, such as the National Drama Theatre of Gorno-Altaysk and Choros-Gurkina Park. These are located 7 kilometres south in Gorno-Altaysk. Not ready to give back the rental car just yet? Chapel of St. Nicholas of Myra and St. Macarius Temple of Gorno-Altai are in Aya, 10 kilometres to the southwest of Maima.

Heading out and seeing the surrounding landscape can't get much better when your options include engaging activities like mountain climbing and hiking.

After outdoor fun for the entire family? Picnicking and bird watching are fabulous ways to make the most of a day.

Take the worries out of travel planning by signing up for some guided nature walks and wildlife spotting tours. Join like-minded travellers as your dependable tour guide shows you all that the region has on offer.

Whether you're paddling in it, floating on it or bouncing along its surface, not much beats being next to the water. You can take your pick of a number of watersports here, including swimming and canoeing.

If you're searching for some activities to do in the winter months, go snowboarding or skiing. You'll be so busy having a ball, you'll hardly even notice the teeth-chattering temperatures!

You're bound to find heaps of treasures in the region's art museums, history museums and theaters.

Get some insight into the region by spending time at the close by old towns. Do your research beforehand or find the most enlightened tour guide you can find.

Are you searching for a little serenity? Don't be surprised if you find what you're looking for at Maima's churches and temples.

'There is no love sincerer than the love of food,' according to George Bernard Shaw, but throw travel into the mix and it's a match made in heaven. You're invited to merge your two greatest loves by eating and drinking your way across Altai Republic.

A staple ingredient in the cuisine here is reindeer meat. Another is rye. They're worth giving a try if you're not already a fan.

We don't think you'll need too much persuading to order some lymonnyk (lemon pie), a dessert that'll make you want to pack your bags and settle down here for good.

It's impossible to get the full travelling experience until you've tasted the local brew. Whether you'd like to sit back in a quiet corner or get a bit of liquid courage to make new friends, order Baltika Premium Lager.

Attempt to knock down that pesky language barrier by memorising some words in the local tongue. You'll gain a more authentic experience and some new buddies while you're at it! 'Prijatnovo appetita!' can be very useful. It's how you say 'enjoy your meal'. 'Za zdarov'e!', which means 'cheers/good health!', is another one you might need.

If you're thinking of going to Maima in June, you'll want to be here on the 12th for Russia Day. There's always plenty of excitement leading up to this day of national celebration.

Like all good things, your time here must eventually come to an end. When it's time to pack up your belongings and head off, say one last "Poka!" and spend your remaining holiday allowance on some postcards to take home.

Located 400 kilometres to the northwest is Tolmachevo Airport (OVB), the closest terminal. Make sure you have enough time to find it.
