Holidays in Manga

Over being an armchair traveller? Want to experience the real thing? Manga is the perfect place to start. You'll find it among the breathtaking rural landscapes, beaches, coastal plains and forests of Papua New Guinea. (You'll have to venture off the tourist trail a bit, but that's what travelling is all about, right?)

It's situated 280 kilometres to the north of Papua New Guinea's capital, Port Moresby.

Escape on a journey to some nearby natural attractions. 40 kilometres out of Manga, Mt Lunaman is waiting to be explored. Rainforest Habitat, 45 kilometres away, is another lovely place to kick your feet up.

Do you want to venture out a little bit? Bulolo is 30 kilometres to the south of Manga and Lae is 40 kilometres to the northeast. Hop in the car and find out what's happening out there!

See the local region from a new angle and try a bit of mountain climbing or hiking. They're both well-liked activities in this corner of the globe.

Organising your own itinerary is fun, but every so often it's a relief to let someone else make the hard decisions. Guided nature walks and wildlife spotting tours offer a convenient way to get to know the region.

Whether you would rather be in, around or on it, everybody loves the water! Why not add a splash of excitement to your escape by doing some swimming and snorkeling?

Our holiday itineraries are often dependent on the weather, but thankfully that isn't the case with every attraction. Rain or shine, look around the region's craft workshops any time you like.

It's hard to think of a nicer way to appreciate the surrounding area than by visiting its open-air markets.

Deepen your understanding of this area's intriguing past by checking out some of the nearby war relics and monuments. Do your own research into their background or introduce yourself to the most well-informed tour guide you can find.

Eating is among life's greatest pleasures, and since you're reading this, you probably think travel is too. Combine your appetite for both by going out and tasting the local cuisine at some of the bars, cafés and restaurants across town.

Are you a fan of breadfruit (ulu)? What about coconuts? Whether you're wild about them or not, they are two essential ingredients commonly used in the cooking here.

When Manga residents talk to you about their favourite foods, it's likely you'll hear chicken pot or kokoda fish uttered a few times. These signature dishes form part of the area's identity and should be on any foodie's list.

If you're not one to say no to dessert, you should definitely introduce your palate to saksak (dumplings made with sugar and sago). This sweet treat represents the region in just one bite.

Delectable food, dancing and music — national celebrations show us the best of what a country has to offer. Be sure to join hands with the locals on Independence Day on the 16th of September.

Time to head home? Catch a final sunset in the spectacular Papua New Guinea region before you have to say goodbye.

Jackson International Airport (POM), the nearest airport, is some 280 kilometres to the south from the centre of Manga. Map a route, pack your bags and set an alarm — and make sure you don't hit the snooze button too many times!
