Holidays in Manong

Life in the big city doing your head in? Pretty sure a change of scene would sort you out? Then whisk yourself off to Manong and veg out among the fabulous rural landscapes, beaches, coastal plains and forests of Perak.

It's located 190 kilometres northwest of Kuala Lumpur, the national capital of Malaysia.

Teluk Batik Beach and Teluk Nipah Beach are great options if you're after somewhere to unwind by the ocean.

There are some delightful natural attractions around Manong. Why not venture 40 kilometres to Gua Tempurung Limestone Caves? Alternatively, appreciate some of Mother Nature's finest work at Burmese Pool, 30 kilometres away.

There's nothing more exciting than the atmosphere of live soccer! Watch the Perak FA bid for glory on their home ground at Perak Stadium, 25 kilometres away in Ipoh.

There's even more to see and do just down the road. Pusing, 18 kilometres to the southeast, is known for Kellie's Castle and Aeon Station 18. Though, if the Masjid Ubudiah and the Istana Kota are more your thing, go 19 kilometres north from Manong to Kuala Kangsar.

All Saints’ Church, the Perak Museum and Commonwealth Allied War Cemetery are all quite close to Taiping, 40 kilometres to the northwest. Want some more reasons to stop by? Perak Prison and the Muzium Perak are not far away either.

Want to have a bit of fun off terra firma? Perak is a wonderful area to dive into some swimming and snorkeling. They're must-do activities, even for landlubbers!

Spend a few hours indoors looking at the wonders of the region's craft workshops.

For something outdoors that everyone will like, check out the local area's open-air markets.

Get a deeper understanding of the region by checking out one or two traditional villages. Do your research beforehand or introduce yourself to the most well-informed tour guide you can find.

Learn all about the area's spiritual side by organising a visit to its temples. Take a few minutes to quietly reflect or simply observe the locals in prayer.

Whether you enjoy the thrill of Michelin stars or devouring a snack from a street stall, tasting the local food and drink is one of the best things about travel. So why not tingle your taste buds by tucking into some of the region's finest offerings?

Don't miss the opportunity to dig into a plate of ikan bakar (grilled seafood) or heong peng (shallot filled pastry). These distinctive dishes come highly recommended by the locals.

Dedicated travellers tend to make an effort to learn a few words in the local tongue. They've come to realise that being able to speak with the local people isn't just convenient, it's fun! You'll be glad you learnt 'Apa khabar? ', which translates as 'how are you?'. 'Sudah lama tidak berjumpa', which means 'long time no see', is also quite common.

Want to get involved in the Independence Day festivities? Mark down the 31st of August on your calendar and get ready to let your hair down with the locals!

With just a little bit of your travel allowance remaining in your pocket and some incredible memories that will last forever, say a final "Sampai nanti" to Manong.

When it's time to fly off, make sure you have enough time to reach Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL). Sitting 220 kilometres to the southeast from downtown Manong, this is the closest terminal.
