There are several bottom line things I require from any hotel: a secure room, easily available hot water, a comfortable bed, and an operational TV. All the rest is icing on the cake. At La Puerta de Enmedio, it was all icing and very little cake. The furnishings were attractive and the grounds delightful.
However, when we tried the key in the lock of the first room they showed us, the key immediately broke off in the lock. In the room we finally accepted, the sliding bolt inside lock was non-functional. One could grow a long beard waiting for the hot water to come on, although--in fairness--it did eventually, at a very low rate of pressure. The TV, which was connected to the Sky system, refused to function. Even after the hotel finally got the Sky people there to "fix" it, the TV soon broke down again.
The staff, with the exception of their groundskeeper, was almost completely absent and it took great effort to find them even just to check in. Nobody seemed to be in charge.
