It's situated around 15 kilometres outside of Carbonera and about 30 kilometres from Jibacoa.

You don't have to be a kid to take a trip to the park. Stretch your legs or maybe even practise some yoga at Parque de la Libertad.

You probably know about its must-see museums and malls, but don't forget that Matanzas has some impressive nature reserves too. Las Cuevas de Bellamar and La Arboleda are two to consider. For those who haven't quite had their fix, Cueva Saturno and Cuevas de Santa Catalina are a couple more worth experiencing.

Whether the sky is clear or gloomy, a few hours spent at the Pharmaceutics Museum or the Museo de la Ruta de los Esclavos will be sure to add an extra something to your day.

Immerse yourself in the terrific collection of works being exhibited at the Galería de Arte Provincial. If anything in particular catches your eye, see if you're able to learn something about the creator.

The best way to understand what's going on in the present is to learn about the past. Find out what's made this city the destination it is today at the Provincial Museum and the Museo Histórico Provincial.

Don't go home without venturing to one of Matanzas' much-loved historic sites, such as Palacio de Gobierno.

If you've always found it hard keeping up with the Joneses, consider for a second the neighbours of Palacio de Justicia. The striking architecture and luxurious furnishings of this famed residence would be near impossible to top!

If you've ever fantasised about living like a king or queen, a trip to Morrillo Castle should be high up on your travel itinerary. Just as captivating, Castillo del Morrillo looks like it's sprung straight out of a fairytale book.

Searching for some deeper meaning on your trip? Set out on a pilgrimage to the city's most important religious sites, such as Matanzas Cathedral and Ermita de Monserrate. Another suggestion is to check for guided tours at Iglesia de Monserrate.

As an important feature of Matanzas' layout, Parque Libertad is worth visiting. There's usually a decent crowd there, so it's a good spot to hang around and enjoy the atmosphere of the city.

Check the lineup at the Sauto Theater, because there's nothing more memorable than a great show. The Teatro Sauto is another top venue if you're keen for more.

They probably aren't on the cover of any travel magazines, but Puente de Bacunayagua and Plaza de la Vigía are still worth a look. There's also plenty to keep you interested at Puente Calixto García and Río Canímar & Around.
