Holidays in Mavrovo

We get it! That plane overhead let loose your inner adventurer, right? Then a trip to Mavrovo might just be the answer! From here, you'll be able to venture off the well-trodden tourist trail and explore the pleasant rural landscapes of F.Y.R.O. Macedonia.

From Mavrovo, venture 70 kilometres northeast to get to Skopje, a well-known city. You can also take off 85 kilometres to the southwest to visit another major city, Tirana.

Galičnik and Sveti Jovan Bigorski Monastery are near the middle of Mavrovi Anovi, 5 kilometres to the north of Mavrovo. Why not go there and take a look?

Heading to Prizren? This destination is only 60 kilometres to the north. If you're setting up camp here, make sure you check out Prizren Fortress, Sezai Surroi Sports Center and Maksut Pasha Mosque. Also consider swinging by the Sinan Pasha Mosque and the Albanian League of Prizren Museum [Muzeu Lidhja Shqiptare e Prizrenit].

Experience the region's terrain from a fresh perspective and sign up for some ice skating or mountain biking. They're both well-liked activities around here.

Let someone else take care of the details as you meet fellow travellers on guided nature walks, cycling tours and winery tours.

Sure, it's quite nice to be beside the water, but it's so much more fun to be in or on it! Don't pass up the opportunity to have a crack at some of the region's watersports, such as swimming and canoeing.

Take advantage of the colder weather here by taking your kids snowboarding. Skiing is another stimulating activity for the entire family.

We can't say what you'll find behind the doors of the region's art museums, history museums, art galleries and craft workshops, but you can be certain it's going to be interesting!

If you were to ask some locals about places to go in the surrounding area, you'll most likely be directed to the lovely open-air markets.

If you'd like to get a glimpse into the region's past, why not look around its ruins, traditional villages, old towns, fortresses, historic bridges and archeological sites? Do some research beforehand to get some insight into their historical importance.

Yearning for some peace of mind? You might just discover what you're looking for at Mavrovo's churches, cathedrals, mosques and monasteries.

Whether you prefer the sophistication of Michelin stars or gnawing on a snack from a street stall, tasting the local food and drink is perhaps the best thing about travel. So why not tantalise your taste buds by tucking into some of the region's scrumptious offerings?

Chicken and eggplant are some popular ingredients used in many dishes here. If you don't have a liking for them already, you will by the end of your visit!

While you're in Mavrovo, why not eat like a local? That means digging into a meal of ajvar (relish from red peppers) or kashkaval (milk cheese), two of the region's classic dishes.

We don't think you'll need too much persuading to have a nibble of mekici (fried, kneaded dough), a sweet treat that'll make you want to pack up your bags and move here.

If you truly want to see the big pitcher, take the hopportunity to gulp down a beer. Schooner rather than later! Terrible beer puns aside, don't forget to order Zlaten Dab, one of the most popular local brews.

You needn't be a vino savant to know a decent drop! Here, cabernet and smederevka shouldn't be ignored.

Fortunately Mavrovo will stay just where it is, so this "Doviduvanye" doesn't need to be your last!

Ready to fly home? Choose a route, pack up your bags and check your alarm clock. The closest airport, Rinas International Airport (TIA), is around 90 kilometres to the west.
