The rooms were smaller than expected, the beds only had one pillow, and the shower leaked, but it would still have been fine accommodations if not for the staff. All amenities had a $15 per person fee-pool, gym, breakfast. We got the first hint of the service level when told that the free shuttle was fully booked for when we needed it. No apology or suggestion for that. (It’s actually a 5 minute walk-why couldn’t they just tell us that?) When later we tried to access the gym, when we asked where that information about extra fees could be found, she pointed to a sign on her desk. It’s a bit hard to read when booking from across the world. The fees were annoying, but she could have easily delivered the information in a different manner. Every time we returned to the desk for a question it grew more stressful. Where was the service a property like this usually offers? Was she just having a bad day or did I do something to warrant the treatment? We were determined not to get angry, but to understand what the deal was. After a protracted conversation we finally got the ‘why’ of it. We’d booked through Expedia. Horror! And ‘everyone knows you don’t get (read deserve) amenities when you book through Expedia.’ How does one book travel in a foreign country without using a trusted travel service? I’d never heard of the Ibis Styles brand and trust me, I’ll never book them again. Shocking service and zero amenities sums up the experience. All dressed up, but with no place to go.
