Holidays in Mitera

Can't sleep? Keep throwing your leg in and out of the doona? Could be that intrepid spirit of yours! So what are you waiting for? Get up, dig out your passport and book a ticket to Mitera!

From Mitera, head about 85 kilometres northeast to reach the popular city of Okayama.

Be on the lookout for seashells to add to your collection or try to spot small animals like starfish and sea urchins at Katsurahama Beach and Kashima Beach. You can find these fantastic strips of coastline 95 kilometres and 100 kilometres away, respectively.

You won't need to be stuck in a car all day to experience some nature. Just 40 kilometres out of Mitera, Mount Noro is a favourite spot to get some fresh air. More scenic surrounds await at Hyoutan Pond, 40 kilometres away.

In the mood for some exercise? Work off some of those holiday calories by walking around Tatara Shimanami Park. You can also keep your eyes open for native plants and critters at the Innoshima Flower Center.

Skiers adore Mitera, as it offers easy access to Asahitengusuton Ski Area and Shingo Daiichi Ski Resort. Don't forget to pack your warmest gear! These snow-capped playgrounds can get decidedly chilly.

Seize the opportunity to head to other close-by sights, such as Hyakkan Island Lighthouse and Yuge Shrine. You'll come across them 10 kilometres southeast in Kamijima. Don't want to give back the hire car just yet? Senkoji Park and the Senko-ji Temple are in Onomichi, 15 kilometres to the north of Mitera.

The Nankobo, Itoyama Park and the Kurushima Strait Outlook Museum are all quite close to Imabari, 25 kilometres to the southwest. Need more excuses to swing by? The Enmeiji Temple and the Imabari Kono Museum are not far away either.

Whether you enjoy the sophistication of Michelin stars or gulping down a snack from a street cart, tasting the local food and drink is one of the best things about travel. So why not tingle your taste buds by trying some of the area's decadent offerings?

An essential ingredient in the food here is beef. Another is noodles. They're worth getting a taste for if you're not already a fan.

Ask one of the locals what dish best sums up the region and tempura (deep fried seafood or vegetables) will likely be among the first things they advise. Hako-zushi (square sushi) is another regional specialty you might like to tuck into.

If you're here for the dessert, you're not going to be disappointed. Try anpan (sweet roll), a scrumptious treat that's sure to hit your sweet spot.

Is there anything more pleasurable than tossing back an icy glass of beer topped off with a perfect foam head? Satiate your thirst and make friends with the locals over some Asahi Premium Beer Jukusen.

Junmaishu is what most locals have when the night calls for something with more bite. Ask the bar person for a taste and see if it wows your taste buds.

Your visit to the Hiroshima region is certain to be more fulfilling if you take the time to learn a couple of the local phrases and expressions. Try to articulate 'Ohayō gozaimasu'. It translates as 'good morning'. 'O-namae wa nan desu ka' ('what's your name?') is one more you might need.

Celebrated throughout the country, Birthday of Emperor Akihito happens each year on the 23rd of December. If you're lucky enough to be here at this time, it'll be difficult not to get swept up in the excitement!

It's always sad to say "後でお会いしましょう (Atode o ai shimashou)" to Mitera, but don't worry, it will still be there next time!

Would you like to know where the nearest airport is? Well, it's Kansai International Airport (KIX) and it is 200 kilometres to the east.
