About this property

Distinctive. Iconic. Unmatched. One-of-a-kind 300-acre Horse Retreat

Views to of the famous Montana Rims. Gaze out along the prairie as the sunsets behind herd's of mule deer, pheasants and coyotes howling in the distance. Horses running through the pasture as you soak in a midnight star gazing hot tub! Follow up your night with a morning horse back ride along the old railroad of the famous Calamity Jane horse Cache road to her secret hide out (if you can make it). This property boarders two historic sights the Nez-Perce battle ground and the Calamity Jane Horse Cache Canyon Creek is the location of the second-to-last battle of the Nez Perce Flight of 1877. After emerging from Yellowstone National Park, the Nez Perce were pursued by the Seventh U.S. Cavalry under Samuel Sturgis. In a rearguard action, the Nez Perce were able to gain time by successfully stopping the pursuing troops at Canyon Creek on September 13th.
Calamity Jane is Famous and Steeped in western lore, the ranch has a rich history dating back to the 1800s when Martha Jane Canary, aka “Calamity Jane,” watered her horses at the ranch’s Canyon Creek before driving them up to the infamous plateau titled the Calamity Jane Horse Cache on USGS maps. According to local legend, Calamity was first introduced to the property at the Battle at Canyon Creek, a bloody showdown on the ranch during which Chief Joseph and the Nez Pierce Indians locked horns with Colonel Sturgis and the U.S. Calvary. Though the Nez Pierce prevailed in the battle, they lost over 400 horses, and this defeat ultimately prevented them from reaching the Canadian border and joining waiting Sioux Chief Sitting Bull. Following the battle, Calamity Jane acted as a nurse, ferrying wounded soldiers down the Yellowstone River, and establishing herself as a local humanitarian, thus building the reputation that wherever there was a calamity, Jane would be there to help. Thoroughly captivated by the grandeur of the ranch, Calamity remained in the area, purchased land, and lived on the ranch. Today, the ranch is home to an abundance of wildlife, including mule and white-tailed deer, antelope, mountain lion, bobcat, coyote, raccoon, badger, pheasant, bald and golden eagles, red-tailed hawk, great horned owls, wild turkey, pigeon, Canadian geese, ducks, great blue herons, sharp-tailed grouse, and Hungarian partridge.
