This hotel was the low point of an otherwise wonderful trip to Monterey. From arrival, we were met with disorganized and indifferent service — no warmth, no professionalism, and no real help with our luggage despite being only 30 minutes early.
The room was a major disappointment. The shower barely functioned, with weak pressure and inches of standing water. Rust and stains surrounded the toilet bolts, a bathroom handrail was detached from the wall, an old phone jack stuck out awkwardly, and an ancient heater barely operated. The thermostat didn’t work at all, leaving the room hot and stuffy with no way to cool down. The vanity was outside the bathroom by the front door, offering zero privacy and limited storage (4 hangers and a couple small drawers for a 4-night stay).
The patio was dirty, with bird droppings on the table and a direct view of trash bins. Fireplace instructions required long matches, but only damp matchbooks were provided — causing an alarming gas flare when lit. No USB outlets, outdated fixtures, and overall lack of maintenance made it feel like nothing has been updated in 20+ years.
We spent our days exploring the beauty of Monterey and returned each night only to be reminded of how out-of-date and uncared-for this hotel has become. For the high price and online reputation, we expected a romantic and comfortable stay — not a constant reminder of deferred maintenance.
Would not return until a full renovation and staff retraining occur.
